Crested Butte Airpark is a private, residential fly-in airstrip set high in the Rocky Mountains a few miles southeast of the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Home to a small community whose properties adjoin the runway directly, it sits at 8,980 feet, making any approach or departure a genuine high-altitude exercise for the simulator pilot.
Crested Butte Airpark is a private residential airpark and fly-in community located near the mountain town of Crested Butte in the Colorado Rockies. It began life as Buckhorn Ranch before being developed into an airpark of homesites that back directly onto the runway, and it has functioned as a fly-in community for more than four decades. For a simulator pilot the appeal lies in the combination of a short mountain strip, an elevation approaching 9,000 feet, and a dramatic high-alpine setting surrounded by peaks and forest.
The airpark lies in the high country of the Colorado Rockies, about three miles southeast of the town of Crested Butte. It sits at a field elevation of 8,980 feet, giving it a genuinely mountainous operating environment with terrain rising on several sides.
The field has a single physical runway, 11/29, 4,369 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting. There is no ILS or other instrument approach at the field.
No communications frequencies are published for Crested Butte Airpark; there is no known air-ground or ATC frequency, and no navaids or instrument approaches serve the field.
The site began as Buckhorn Ranch before being purchased and developed by investors into the airpark community known today as Crested Butte Airpark. Over more than four decades it grew into a fly-in neighbourhood of one- and two-acre homesites, each with direct access to the runway, described locally as 'beachfront' lots because of that adjacency. The community has hosted Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) events and has sponsored the Young Eagles youth aviation programme, and its residents have a history of volunteering for local search and rescue and medevac support.
Crested Butte Airpark remains a private residential airpark rather than a public-use aerodrome, with homesites arranged around the runway and largely occupied by the fly-in community that developed the site. The community remains active in aviation outreach, including EAA events and Young Eagles sponsorship, and residents assist with search and rescue and medevac tasking when called upon by local emergency services. The runway itself has been resurfaced in recent years, with a widening project planned to increase it from 30 to 50 feet.
