Greenwood Lake Airport (4N1) is a small general aviation field in West Milford, New Jersey, sitting just south of the scenic Greenwood Lake that straddles the New York-New Jersey border. It offers a single lit hard-surface runway and is best known locally for its proximity to the lake's resort communities and its seaplane activity on the water itself.

Overview

Greenwood Lake Airport is a general aviation airfield located in West Milford, Passaic County, New Jersey, immediately south of the interstate lake from which it takes its name. It is a modest but capable field, with a runway reported to be long enough to accommodate small jets, making it of interest to sim pilots wanting a quieter alternative to the busier fields of the New York metropolitan area while still being within easy reach of the city.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies at an elevation of 787 feet, at coordinates 41.1284, -74.3465, in West Milford, New Jersey, just south of Greenwood Lake, which extends north across the state line into the Town of Warwick and the Village of Greenwood Lake in Orange County, New York. The surrounding area is hilly and lightly developed, dominated by the lake itself and the wooded terrain of the New Jersey Skylands and lower Hudson Valley.

Runways

Greenwood Lake Airport has a single physical runway, 06/24, measuring 3,454 feet with a hard surface and runway lighting. There is no instrument landing system at the field.

Radio & Navigation

There is no ILS or other published instrument approach at Greenwood Lake Airport, so arrivals and departures should be flown under visual flight rules.

Visual Reference Points

Greenwood Lake itself, immediately to the north of the airfield, is the dominant visual reference for locating the field; the lake is roughly seven to nine miles long and straddles the New York-New Jersey border, making it easily identifiable from the air. The Village of Greenwood Lake at the lake's northern end and the various marinas and lakeside resorts along its shoreline are further useful landmarks when inbound to the airfield from the north.

The Airfield Today

The airfield's runway is described as long enough to handle small jets, indicating a useful hard-surface strip for light general aviation and business aircraft despite its relatively modest length. Greenwood Lake itself also hosts a seaplane area, along with several large marinas and lakeside restaurants with docks, giving sim pilots flying floatplanes an additional option for operations in the vicinity alongside the land airfield.
