Falmouth Airpark is a small public-use airport and residential fly-in community on the southwestern side of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, notable for the way its taxiways run directly behind private homes. Owned by the Falmouth Airpark Homeowners Association, it offers visiting VFR pilots a single asphalt runway and a quiet, tree-lined approach typical of Cape Cod general aviation fields.
Falmouth Airpark is a privately owned, public-use airport and residential airpark in East Falmouth, Massachusetts, operated by the Falmouth Airpark Homeowners Association. It is unusual among general aviation fields in that houses are built along the taxiways rather than a conventional apron, giving it the character of a genuine fly-in community. For the sim pilot it offers a compact, low-key Cape Cod destination with a single paved runway and a distinctly residential setting.
The airpark lies on the southwestern part of Cape Cod, about four miles northeast of the central business district of Falmouth, in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. It sits in East Falmouth off Fresh Pond Road, north of Route 28. It grew up in the same area as the former Coonamessett Airport and lies not far from Otis Air National Guard Base (Joint Base Cape Cod) and the region's other Cape Cod airfields.
The field has a single physical runway, 07/25, 2,286 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting.
Traffic works the CTAF/UNICOM frequency 122.8. Cape Approach/Departure can be reached on 118.2 for transiting or arriving traffic in the wider Cape Cod area. No instrument approach or navaids are associated with the field.
The published traffic pattern is a right-hand pattern for Runway 7 and a left-hand pattern for Runway 25. Pilots should be alert for obstructions close to both thresholds: trees roughly 33 feet high stand about 300 feet from the Runway 7 end, 60 feet left of centreline, requiring a 3:1 clearance slope, while trees around 25 feet high lie about 300 feet from the Runway 25 end, 125 feet right of centreline, requiring a 4:1 clearance slope.
The airpark is located in East Falmouth, off Fresh Pond Road and north of Route 28, some four miles northeast of downtown Falmouth on the southwestern corner of Cape Cod. The residential layout, with homes fronting directly onto taxiways rather than a conventional ramp, is a useful visual cue when identifying the field from the air.
Falmouth Airpark developed to supersede the earlier Coonamessett Airport, which stood close to Otis Air National Guard Base and closed during the 1960s. Historical aerial photography shows the airpark itself had a grass runway in 1960, which had been paved by 1968, reflecting its transition into the residential aviation community seen today.
The airpark remains an active general aviation field with both single and multi-engine aircraft based there, the great majority of movements being local and transient general aviation traffic. Fuel is available on the field in 100LL and UL94 grades, and facilities include hangars and tiedowns, though there is no airframe or powerplant maintenance service on site. As a privately owned residential airpark, visiting pilots should be mindful of its community character, with aircraft movements confined to taxiways running behind private homes.
