Aasiaat Airport is a small regional airfield on the shore of Disko Bay in western Greenland, serving the town of Aasiaat with a single hard-surfaced runway suitable for STOL operations. Aasiaat Airport (Mittarfik Aasiaat) serves the town of Aasiaat in the Qeqertalik municipality of western Greenland. It is operated by the Greenland Airport Authority (Mittarfeqarfiit) and is designed to handle STOL aircraft, reflecting its short runway and the demanding operating environment of Disko Bay. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers a compact, uncomplicated field set against dramatic Arctic scenery, though the lack of aircraft de-icing equipment makes winter operations here notably challenging.
The airport lies in Disko Bay on the western coast of Greenland, about 1 nautical mile northeast of the town of Aasiaat, within the Qeqertalik municipality. It sits in a remote Arctic setting with no other airports in the immediate vicinity, and pilots should expect the wide open, sparsely controlled airspace typical of Greenlandic domestic aviation.
Aasiaat has one physical runway, 11/29, a hard-surfaced strip 2,606 feet in length that is lit for night operations. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid associated with the field.
No communications frequencies are published for Aasiaat Airport, so pilots should expect to operate largely on a self-announce basis or coordinate with Greenlandic flight information services as appropriate for the region.
The airport sits close to the coastline of Disko Bay, roughly 1 nautical mile northeast of Aasiaat town, with the settlement itself, the surrounding bay, and the characteristic Greenlandic coastal terrain serving as the primary visual references for locating and approaching the field.
Aasiaat Airport opened on 17 October 1998, replacing an earlier heliport that had served the town from a site to the southwest. Built to accommodate short take-off and landing aircraft, it was constructed to improve air links to Aasiaat, a task previously handled by helicopter services operating directly from the town.
The airport continues to support scheduled operations by Air Greenland, with flights to Ilulissat and Nuuk, alongside seasonal services to a number of smaller settlements including Akunnaaq, Attu, Kangaatsiaq, Kitsissuarsuit, Niaqornaarsuk, Qasigiannguit and Qeqertarsuaq. There is no aircraft de-icing equipment on site, which limits winter operations, and the field is connected to the town by a short road of around 3 kilometres.
