Hornafjörður Airport (BIHN/HFN) serves the town of Höfn in southeastern Iceland, sitting close to the coast some five kilometres north of the settlement. It offers a single hard-surfaced, lit runway aligned 18/36 and is operated by Isavia under an aerodrome flight information service, making it a useful and scenic staging point for pilots exploring the glacier and fjord country of the southeast.

Overview

Hornafjörður Airport lies just north of Höfn í Hornafirði in southeast Iceland and is operated by Isavia. It has long been the aerial gateway to this remote corner of the country, connecting the town with Reykjavík, and its single runway and AFIS-only service give it the flavour of many of Iceland's smaller domestic fields. The airport's proximity to Vatnajökull and the surrounding fjord scenery, together with its use as a filming location for Nuuk Airport in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, add to its interest for the visiting pilot.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located about five kilometres north of the town of Höfn í Hornafirði in the Austurland (southeast) region of Iceland. Traffic is worked by Reykjavík Control on the area control frequency, with local aerodrome information provided by AFIS rather than a full air traffic control tower.

Runways

Hornafjörður has one physical runway, 18/36, of 4,868 feet with a hard surface and runway lighting. There is no ILS approach.

Radio & Navigation

Reykjavík ACC controls the surrounding airspace on 119.7 MHz. Local aerodrome information is provided by AFIS on 118.1 MHz. A non-directional beacon, Hornafjordur (ident HN), is sited 1.24 nautical miles off the threshold of runway 36 and can be used to assist in locating and approaching the field.

History

Hornafjörður Airport opened on 22 September 1965, replacing an earlier landing ground on the coastal spit south of the town at Melatangi, Suðurfjörður. The airport originally had a second, shorter east-west runway of about 800 metres, which was later decommissioned, leaving the present north-south runway as the field's sole strip. A larger terminal building was added in 1982. Icelandair served the airport from its opening, with Eagle Air taking over the route from 2007 until 2024, before Icelandair resumed operations in 2025 under a public service contract. The airport also gained a moment of cinematic fame in 2013, standing in for Nuuk Airport in Greenland in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, complete with an Air Greenland aircraft on the apron.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to handle scheduled air services linking Höfn with Reykjavík, most recently operated by Icelandair. Operations are managed by Isavia, and the aerodrome is served by AFIS rather than a control tower, reflecting its status as a domestic regional field rather than a major hub.
