Húsavík Airport is a small domestic aerodrome on the north coast of Iceland, serving the whaling and tourism town of Húsavík and the wider Diamond Circle region. With a single hard-surfaced runway and no instrument landing system, it now supports general aviation, medevac flights and only occasional scheduled services, making it a quiet but scenic stop for visiting pilots.
Húsavík Airport serves the town of Húsavík on Iceland's north coast, close to Skjálfandi Bay and within reach of the Diamond Circle sightseeing route that takes in Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss waterfall and Ásbyrgi Canyon. It is operated by Isavia and, since the loss of regular scheduled flights, functions mainly as a general aviation and medevac field, giving simulator pilots an uncluttered, scenic Icelandic destination with genuine operational history.
The airport lies on Iceland's north coast a short distance from the town of Húsavík, within Reykjavik's area of aeronautical control; Reykjavik Area Control Centre works the airspace on 119.7 MHz. There is no control tower, and an aerodrome flight information service (AFIS) is provided locally on 118.1 MHz.
The airfield has a single physical runway, 02/20, 5210 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting on both directions. There is no ILS.
Local traffic is worked by AFIS on 118.1 MHz, callsign INFO, with the wider area handled by Reykjavik ACC on 119.7 MHz. There is no ILS at the field. Two non-directional beacons are associated with the airport: the Gardur NDB (ident GA), some 4.1 nautical miles out, and the Husavik NDB (ident HS), 1.1 nautical miles from the runway threshold, providing basic non-precision guidance for arriving traffic.
The airport sits beside Skjálfandi Bay on Iceland's north coast, close to the start of the Diamond Circle touring route; Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss waterfall and Ásbyrgi Canyon lie inland along this route and can serve as broad orientation features when routing towards Húsavík.
Húsavík Airport opened in 1957 and has over the decades been served by a succession of Icelandic operators, including Icelandair, Air Iceland, Mýflug Air, Norlandair and most recently Eagle Air. The 2018 opening of the Vaðlaheiði tunnel cut the road journey to Akureyri and its international airport to about 75 kilometres and roughly an hour's drive, and this improved land link led to a steady reduction in scheduled air services. Eagle Air's scheduled flights to Reykjavík ended in April 2024, after which the Icelandic government funded a subsidised winter service operated by Norlandair between December 2024 and March 2025.
Since March 2025 there have been no scheduled passenger services to Húsavík Airport, and the field now principally supports general aviation and medevac flights.
