Tofino / Long Beach Airport (CYAZ) serves the resort town of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, sitting amid a spectacular landscape of Pacific coastline, temperate rainforest and the Pacific Rim National Park. It is a medium-sized regional aerodrome with three hard-surfaced, lit runways, making it a useful and scenic destination for VFR pilots exploring the west coast of the island.
Tofino / Long Beach Airport lies on the exposed west coast of Vancouver Island, close to the town of Tofino and the surfing beaches of Long Beach. It is operated as a regional airport and provides scheduled and charter air links to the outside world for this remote stretch of coastline, as well as being a base for floatplane and wheeled operators serving the Clayoquot Sound area. For a simulator pilot, the appeal lies in the dramatic approach over the Pacific and the surrounding rainforest and national park scenery.
The airfield is situated about 11 km south of Tofino and roughly 30 km north of Ucluelet, alongside the Pacific Rim Highway on Vancouver Island's west coast. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, the Pacific Rim National Park and the Long Beach Golf Course. Vancouver Centre provides area control in the surrounding airspace.
Tofino / Long Beach has three hard-surfaced runways, all lit. Runway 11/29 is the longest, at 4488 ft (runway 11) and 4968 ft (runway 29). Runway 07/25 runs 4254 ft (runway 07) and 4626 ft (runway 25). Runway 16/34 runs 4628 ft (runway 16) and 4104 ft (runway 34). There is no ILS at the field.
Pilots can expect to work Vancouver Centre on 132.9 MHz for area control services. A remote communications outlet for Pacific Radio is available on 123.25 MHz for flight information and traffic advisories in the vicinity of the airfield.
The airfield is a prominent feature along the Pacific Rim Highway, flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation lands, the Pacific Rim National Park and the Long Beach Golf Course, all of which serve as useful visual references when inbound from either the Tofino or Ucluelet direction along the coast.
The airport supports both scheduled and charter flying. Harbour Air operates wheeled services linking Tofino with Vancouver International Airport's South Terminal, complementing its floatplane routes, while charter operators including Tofino Air, Atleo Air and West Coast Wild Adventures serve the wider region. Jet A fuel is available on site via cardlock, supplied by a third party and sold without the Prist additive; current published pricing has been around 2.06 dollars per litre. The airport is managed under an arrangement between the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations.'
