Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon Airport is a public aerodrome operated by Transport Canada, situated a short distance north of the town of Blanc-Sablon on Quebec's remote Lower North Shore. It functions as a vital regional air link for a string of small communities along the Gulf of St Lawrence that have little or no road access, and it also serves connections toward Labrador. For a simulator pilot, it offers an evocative combination of a single well-equipped runway, ILS approach procedures and a strikingly isolated, windswept coastal setting.
The airport lies in the Golfe-du-Saint-Laurent Regional County Municipality in the Côte-Nord administrative region of eastern Quebec, about 2 nautical miles north of Blanc-Sablon itself. It is one of a small cluster of North Shore airports, alongside Chevery, Kegaska, La Romaine, La Tabatière, Saint-Augustin and Tête-à-la-Baleine, all serving communities strung along the Quebec side of the Strait of Belle Isle and the Gulf of St Lawrence.
The airport has one physical runway, 05/23, measuring 4,490 feet, with a hard surface and runway lighting. Runway 05 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument-flight capability into this otherwise remote strip.
The airport uses a mandatory frequency (MF) of 122 MHz, and the same frequency, 122 MHz, serves as the remote communications outlet (RCO) linked to Quebec Radio. Pilots should expect to operate on this frequency for both traffic advisories and radio relay through Quebec Radio while in the vicinity. An ILS is available for runway 05.
The airport continues to provide scheduled air services connecting Blanc-Sablon with other Lower North Shore communities such as Chevery, La Romaine, Natashquan and Saint-Augustin, as well as with Sept-Iles, Quebec City and Montreal, reflecting its role as a lifeline for communities without road connections to the rest of the province. It also supports onward links toward Goose Bay, St Anthony and St John's in Newfoundland and Labrador. The field is operated by Transport Canada and recorded average annual movements in the low thousands in recent statistics.
