Beyond scheduled passenger and cargo services, the airport is used as a forward operating base by the Royal Canadian Air Force and as a diversion field on polar air routes, giving it an outsized role for its remote location and making it an interesting stop for anyone flying long Arctic routes in the simulator.

Iqaluit Radio provides Flight Service Station and Mandatory Frequency service on 122.2 MHz, which also serves as the VDF frequency and the FSS working frequency for aircraft within 5 nautical miles below 3,100 feet ASL. History

The site was surveyed for a potential transatlantic airfield in 1941 by a United States Army Air Forces team under Captain Elliott Roosevelt, though the location he recommended at Cape Rammelsberg proved impractical. In 1942 an American expedition instead selected a level meadow along the Sylvia Grinnell River at Koojesse Inlet, and construction crews began building runways there. By 1943 the base, designated Crystal II and coded Chaplet, had grown into a substantial facility and was one of three Arctic weather stations known as the Crystal sites, alongside Fort Chimo (Kuujjuaq) and Padloping Island. It was intended as a key node on the Crimson East air route linking eastern and central USAAF Air Transport Command routes to Greenland and onward to the United Kingdom, though the plan was shelved in late 1943 once the main North Atlantic ferry route via Greenland proved successful. The base originally had two runways, a 6,000-foot paved strip and a 5,000-foot gravel strip; the shorter gravel runway was decommissioned by 1944 and its former alignment is today a commercial area along Akilliq roadway in Iqaluit. Jurisdiction passed to the Military Air Transport Service in 1948, and the airfield went on to support the Distant Early Warning Line and act as a stopover on the North Atlantic ferry route as jet airliners reduced the need for piston-era refuelling stops. In February 2006 an Airbus A380 used Iqaluit for cold-weather testing on its first North American visit, and Airbus Military returned in February 2013 to test the A400M Atlas transport under similarly frigid conditions.

Iqaluit Airport today functions as the principal air link for Nunavut's eastern communities, hosting scheduled service to Ottawa, Rankin Inlet and Kuujjuaq on carriers such as Canadian North, alongside connections to smaller settlements across the region. It continues to serve as a forward operating base for the Royal Canadian Air Force and as a scheduled diversion airport on polar air routes. The airport is owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated by Nunavut Airport Services Ltd, and its Flight Service Station provides continuous weather and advisory coverage.
