Mont-Tremblant International Airport (CYFJ) is a single hard-surfaced runway aerodrome at La Macaza, Quebec, roughly 25 nautical miles north of the town of Mont-Tremblant and about 35 minutes' drive from the ski resort. It is the principal airport serving the Hautes-Laurentides region, handling private, corporate and seasonal scheduled traffic alongside a resident flight training operation.

Overview

Mont-Tremblant International Airport lies at La Macaza in the Laurentians of Quebec, and is described by its operator as the largest airport in the Hautes-Laurentides region. It functions as the main air gateway for both business and leisure travellers heading to the Mont-Tremblant resort area, and hosts a fixed-base operator supporting transient general aviation as well as an exclusive resident flight school, making it a field of interest to visiting VFR pilots as well as those training locally.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the township of La Macaza, about 2.5 nautical miles north of the village and some 25 nautical miles north of the town of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. It operates as an uncontrolled aerodrome using an Aerodrome Traffic Frequency rather than a tower service, with Montreal Center providing area radar/advisory coverage on a discrete frequency.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 02/20, oriented north-south. Runway 02 is 6,157 feet long and Runway 20 is 6,382 feet long; both are hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 817 feet. There is no ILS installed.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at the aerodrome is coordinated on the Aerodrome Traffic Frequency (ATF), which also serves as UNICOM, on 122.7 MHz. Montreal Center can be reached on 133.9 MHz for en-route and area advisory purposes. No instrument landing system is available at the field.

History

The airfield was converted from an earlier use to civilian operation and was subsequently upgraded to international airport status in 2000, a development that went ahead despite local opposition expressed in a referendum held in La Macaza. Scheduled services followed in the years afterward: Continental Airlines began seasonal flights from its Newark hub in December 2007, and the airport later saw seasonal scheduled service from Porter Airlines, which operated until 2022, and from Air Canada during the ski season until 2019.

The Airfield Today

The airport's fixed-base operator provides support for transient aircraft, including refuelling, ground handling and de-icing. Aeroloisir Flight School holds exclusive rights to conduct flight training at the airport, offering instruction for both new and experienced pilots in the surrounding Laurentian terrain. The facility is noted as requiring prior permission for certain operations, and pilots should arrange this in advance of a visit.
