Golden Airport (CYGE) is a small municipal aerodrome in the Rocky Mountain Trench at Golden, British Columbia, owned and operated by the Town of Golden. It offers a single paved runway aligned 14/32 and serves a mix of general aviation, helicopter operators, skydiving and search-and-rescue activity, making it a useful stop for VFR pilots transiting the Columbia Valley.

Overview

Golden Airport is a municipally owned aerodrome serving the town of Golden, British Columbia. It is a modest but active general aviation field, home to helicopter operators, a skydiving organisation, Golden and District Search and Rescue, and a wildfire suppression base, giving it a varied character for a field of its size. For a simulator pilot it offers an approach into mountainous terrain typical of the BC interior, with a single runway and straightforward uncontrolled operations.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at Golden, British Columbia, Canada, at coordinates 51.2992 N, 116.982 W, and sits at an elevation of 2572 feet. It is an uncontrolled aerodrome, as indicated by its use of an aerodrome traffic frequency rather than a tower service.

Runways

Golden Airport has a single physical runway, 14/32, 4472 feet long with a hard surface. There is no ILS available at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can monitor a Remote Communications Outlet on 126.7 MHz for Pacific Radio. Traffic at the aerodrome itself is coordinated on the ATF/UNICOM frequency of 122.8 MHz, with no air traffic control tower in operation.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As an uncontrolled aerodrome, traffic is self-coordinated using the 122.8 MHz ATF/UNICOM frequency; no other published circuit or joining procedures are available from the sources at hand.

History

Golden Municipal Airport is owned and operated by the Town of Golden. In 2019 the Town commissioned HM Aero Aviation Consulting to carry out a comprehensive economic viability study of the airport's current and potential future roles. Following stakeholder engagement, Council voted unanimously to continue operating the airport as an aerodrome and directed the consultants to develop a strategic and tactical plan, which was presented to Council in March. The airport's runway was subsequently renewed through an airfield rehabilitation project, funded by a two million dollar grant from the BC Air Access Program, over six hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the Economic Opportunity Fund, and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the Town of Golden, intended to improve aviation safety, regulatory compliance and support business development at the field.

The Airfield Today

The airport supports day-time operations only and includes taxiways, parking areas, a terminal building, a weather station and aircraft fuelling facilities. A number of businesses and tenants operate from the site, including two helicopter operators, a skydiving organisation, Golden and District Search and Rescue, a wildfire suppression base, and private aircraft hangars. Recent work has renewed the airfield's runway surface as part of a rehabilitation project aimed at improving safety and supporting continued business development.
