Hanover / Saugeen Municipal Airport (CYHS) is a small uncontrolled general aviation aerodrome serving Hanover, Ontario, on the west side of the Saugeen River valley. It offers two paved runways, self-announce radio procedures on a shared UNICOM frequency, and full fuel services, making it a straightforward VFR stop for pilots touring southwestern Ontario.
Hanover / Saugeen Municipal Airport, identified by the ICAO code CYHS, is a small municipally operated aerodrome located at Hanover in southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is a general aviation field with two paved runways and no scheduled airline service, making it a useful and unpretentious destination for visiting light aircraft, touring pilots and local training traffic. Its modest size, uncontrolled airspace and straightforward layout make it an approachable field for VFR flying in the flight simulator.
The airport lies at coordinates 44.158, -81.0632, at a field elevation of 919 feet above sea level, on the outskirts of Hanover in Ontario's Grey and Bruce counties, near the Saugeen River. It is an uncontrolled aerodrome operating under an Aerodrome Traffic Frequency (ATF) regime, with pilots expected to self-announce within a mandatory reporting area of 5 nautical miles and up to 3900 feet ASL when the UNICOM service is in operation. There is no associated control zone or instrument approach infrastructure.
CYHS has two paved (hard-surface) runways, both lit. Runway 01/19 is the longer of the pair at 3960 feet, oriented north-south. Runway 09/27 is shorter, with the database recording 2149 feet available on runway 09 and 2348 feet on runway 27, reflecting differing usable lengths between the two ends. Neither runway is equipped with an ILS.
Traffic at CYHS is coordinated on the ATF/UNICOM frequency of 122.8 MHz, which also serves as the aircraft radio control of aerodrome lighting (ARCAL) frequency, type J, allowing pilots to activate runway lighting on runways 01 and 19 by radio. The UNICOM service operates limited hours; outside those hours traffic should self-announce on the same 122.8 MHz frequency within the mandatory frequency area. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid at the field.
Right-hand circuits are in force for runways 19 and 09, in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulation 602.96, so pilots should plan their pattern accordingly when using either of those runway directions. Traffic should make position calls on the ATF frequency of 122.8 MHz, particularly when operating within the 5 nautical mile, 3900 foot ASL mandatory frequency area surrounding the aerodrome.
The airport is open daily, with summer hours (1 May to 31 October) of 0800 to 1600 and winter hours (1 November to 30 April) of 0800 to 1500; after-hours service can be arranged in advance. Fuel available includes 100LL and Jet A, along with a range of Aeroshell and Phillips aviation oils. Facilities include limited rental hangar space, available building sites for hangar construction, grass tie-downs, a local taxi service and WiFi. Pilots planning to arrive outside published hours should be aware that prior permission is required for after-hours service.
