Montréal / Saint-Hubert Airport (CYHU) is a controlled general aviation and training aerodrome south-east of downtown Montréal, Quebec, with a long six-runway layout including one ILS-equipped strip. It remains an active hub for flight training, corporate operations and historic RCAF associations, making it a useful and interesting destination for VFR pilots in the Montréal area.

Overview

CYHU, Montréal / Saint-Hubert Airport, is a medium-sized aerodrome serving the Montréal region with a mix of general aviation, flight training and corporate traffic. It sits close to the city of Longueuil on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, and its long history of military and civil flying, together with its varied runway layout and instrument approach capability, makes it a rewarding field for simulator pilots to explore.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in controlled airspace close to Montréal, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River near Longueuil, Quebec. It operates with its own tower and ground control, and receives en-route guidance from Montréal Centre, placing it firmly within the busy Montréal terminal environment.

Runways

CYHU offers three physical runway pairs. The main runway, 06L/24R, is 7798 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS serving the 24R approach; note that the reciprocal 06L threshold data shows a slightly shorter landing length of 6698 feet. A parallel runway, 06R/24L, is 3924 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit in both directions. A shorter crosswind runway, 10/28, measures approximately 2420 feet, is also hard-surfaced and lit, giving pilots options for prevailing wind conditions.

Radio & Navigation

Aerodrome traffic is worked on 118.4 MHz, which serves as both the air-to-ground/mandatory frequency and the tower frequency, with Québec Radio also providing VFR advisory service on the same frequency. ATIS is broadcast on 124.9 MHz. Ground control operates on 126.4 MHz, an information frequency is available on 134.15 MHz, and Montréal Centre provides en-route control on 125.15 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 24R.

History

Montréal / Saint-Hubert has long-standing military associations, having served as a training base linked to the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan and the Royal Canadian Air Force. This heritage is reflected in its continuing designation as a field with historic RCAF and BCATP connections.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to support general aviation and flight training, with avgas available on the field and customs clearance offered for arriving aircraft. A landing fee applies. It is home to a resident flying community, including a training organisation based at the airport, and prior permission may be required for some operations.
