Fort McMurray International Airport (CYMM/YMM) sits in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Alberta, and is the largest airport serving northern Alberta and the oil sands region. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway equipped with an ILS, controlled airspace under Edmonton Center, and a mix of airline, charter and general aviation traffic that makes it a useful and interesting northern Canadian destination for a VFR or IFR sim flight.

Overview

Fort McMurray International Airport lies at Fort McMurray, Alberta, and is operated by the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. It is the largest airport in northern Alberta, serving the city of Fort McMurray and the surrounding Wood Buffalo region, and acts as a hub for Air Mikisew as well as an operating base for Air Canada and WestJet. For a simulator pilot it offers a single long, lit, hard-surfaced runway with an ILS approach, a tower and ground frequency, and a setting shaped by the oil sands industry that grew the field from a modest regional strip into a controlled, ILS-equipped international airport.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located at Fort McMurray, Alberta, within Edmonton Center's area of responsibility; en route and approach traffic is worked on 135.7 MHz. On the ground, Fort McMurray Ground handles movement on 121.9 MHz and Fort McMurray Tower operates on 118.1 MHz, which is also used as the mandatory frequency. ATIS is broadcast on 128.5 MHz, and Peace River Radio and Edmonton Radio provide remote communications outlet coverage on 118.1 MHz and 123.55 MHz respectively.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 08/26, hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 08 is 7,407 feet long and runway 26 is 6,957 feet long, with an ILS serving runway 26 for instrument approaches.

Radio & Navigation

ATIS is available on 128.5 MHz. Fort McMurray Tower operates on 118.1 MHz, which also serves as the mandatory frequency (MF). Fort McMurray Ground works on 121.9 MHz. Edmonton Center provides area control on 135.7 MHz, with Edmonton Radio reachable via remote communications outlet on 123.55 MHz and Peace River Radio also listed on the mandatory frequency of 118.1 MHz. Runway 26 is served by an ILS.

History

The Fort McMurray Airport Authority was established in 2010 to manage and develop the airport as traffic grew rapidly with the expansion of oil sands development in the region. Construction of a new passenger terminal began in 2011 to replace the existing facility, which had become insufficient for the growing demand, and the new terminal officially opened on 9 June 2014, designed to handle roughly 1 to 1.5 million passengers a year. Later in 2014 the original terminal building was renovated and reopened as the North Terminal, repurposed primarily for charter and cargo operations.

The Airfield Today

Fort McMurray International Airport today handles scheduled airline services alongside charter and cargo operations from its North Terminal. Air Canada operates to Toronto-Pearson, Air Canada Express and WestJet serve Calgary, WestJet Encore links to Calgary and Edmonton, and McMurray Aviation flies to Fort Chipewyan. General aviation and non-scheduled traffic should be aware that apron parking is limited, and prior permission is required for non-scheduled aircraft.
