The Pas Airport (CYQD) serves the town of The Pas in northern Manitoba from a site near the southern shore of Clearwater Lake, some 19 km northeast of the town centre. It is a certified aerodrome offering a single hard-surfaced runway, scheduled Calm Air services, and general aviation and charter traffic in an otherwise remote part of the province.

Overview

The Pas Airport is a public aerodrome owned and operated by the Town of The Pas, with day-to-day management and technical support provided by Winnipeg Airport Services Corporation (WASCO). It functions as the regional gateway for The Pas and the neighbouring Opaskwayak Cree Nation, combining scheduled passenger flights with charter and general aviation activity. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers a long, well-lit runway in an otherwise sparsely served stretch of northern Manitoba, making it a useful stop or destination for cross-country flying in the region.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies near the southern shore of Clearwater Lake, about 10 nautical miles (19 km) northeast of the town of The Pas, Manitoba. Access from the ground is via Manitoba Highway 287, which runs between the lake to the north and the airport to the south. The aerodrome is certified but uncontrolled, with traffic advisories provided on the mandatory frequency rather than through a control tower.

Runways

The Pas Airport has a single physical runway, 13/31, with a hard surface and runway lighting. The 13 threshold measures approximately 5,835 feet and the 31 threshold approximately 5,819 feet, effectively a runway of just under 5,900 feet in length, suitable for a wide range of general aviation and regional airline aircraft. There is no ILS approach at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at The Pas Airport is coordinated on the mandatory frequency (MF) 122.2 MHz, which also serves as an air-to-ground (A/G) frequency and is monitored via a remote communications outlet as Winnipeg Radio. En route contact with area control is available on Winnipeg Center at 135.625 MHz. Pilots should expect to self-announce intentions on 122.2 MHz in the absence of a control tower.

Visual Reference Points

The most prominent visual feature for locating the field is Clearwater Lake, immediately to the north of the runway, with the airport situated on its southern shore. Manitoba Highway 287 runs along this shoreline and past the airport boundary, providing a clear linear reference for inbound traffic, while the town of The Pas itself lies about 19 km to the southwest.

History

During the Second World War the site was recorded as an RCAF aerodrome, listed around 1942 with three runways under construction: a 6,000-foot strip on 02/20, a 4,000-foot strip on 12/30, and a 6,300-foot strip on 07/25, all with hard asphalt surfaces. The airfield was part of the wartime Air Transport Command network of airfields in Canada used by North American military aviation. Since then the layout has been consolidated into the present single paved runway aligned 13/31.

The Airfield Today

The Pas Airport is a certified aerodrome operated by the Town of The Pas, with WASCO providing airport management and technical services. It receives twice-daily scheduled passenger service from Calm Air, linking The Pas with Flin Flon and Winnipeg, alongside a range of charter operations. Fuel available on site includes 100LL and Jet A-1 (with FSII), accessible through a 24-hour cardlock system, and prior arrangement with the airport may be required for certain services.
