Gander International Airport (CYQX), also operated as CFB Gander, lies in the town of Gander in central Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Gander International Airport, identified by the ICAO code CYQX and IATA code YQX, serves the town of Gander in central Newfoundland and Labrador. It operates as a joint civil-military facility, also known as CFB Gander, and is classed as a medium airport with scheduled airline service. Its long runways and ILS-equipped approaches reflect its historical role as a key staging point for aircraft crossing the North Atlantic, and it remains a useful and characterful destination for simulator pilots flying long-haul or oceanic routes into eastern Canada.
The airport is located at coordinates 48.937 N, 54.5681 W, at a field elevation of 446 feet, on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It sits close to the town of Gander itself, which grew up around the airfield.
Gander has two physical runways. Runway 03/21 is 10,198 feet long with a hard, lit surface, with an ILS serving runway 03. Runway 13/31 is 8,870 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS serving runway 13. Both runways are substantial in length, well able to accommodate large transport and military aircraft as well as light and general aviation traffic.
Aerodrome frequency (A/D) is 128.5 MHz. Approach/Departure (APP/DEP) is served on the same 128.5 MHz. ATIS broadcasts on 124.8 MHz. Ground is on 121.9 MHz. An operations frequency, OUTCAST OPS, is available on 128.85 MHz. A remote communications outlet (RCO) linked to Halifax Radio operates on 126.7 MHz. Tower (TWR) works on 118.1 MHz. Instrument approaches are available, with ILS serving runway 03 and runway 13.
Gander continues to operate as a dual civil and military airfield, with facilities including avgas and customs clearance available for arriving traffic, reflecting its continuing role as an international gateway airport in eastern Canada.
