Smiths Falls-Montague (Russ Beach) Airport is a small uncontrolled aerodrome in eastern Ontario, sitting a few miles east of the town of Smiths Falls and operated by volunteers of the local flying club. With a single hard-surfaced runway and straightforward radio procedures, it makes an approachable stop or training base for VFR pilots in the region.

Overview

Smiths Falls-Montague (Russ Beach) Airport is a community aerodrome in Montague Township, Ontario, jointly owned by Montague Township and the Town of Smiths Falls and run by volunteers from the Smiths Falls Flying Club. It is a modest, single-runway field that supports local flight training and touring light aircraft, making it a pleasant and unhurried destination for a VFR sim pilot exploring the Ottawa Valley area.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies within Class E uncontrolled airspace, roughly 6.5 km (3.5 nautical miles) east of the town of Smiths Falls, Ontario. As an uncontrolled field, pilots are responsible for their own separation and must monitor and use the published traffic frequency when operating in the vicinity.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 06/24, of hard surface construction measuring 3946 feet in length. Both directions are equipped with runway lighting, and there is no instrument landing system serving the field, so arrivals and departures are conducted visually.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at the airport is coordinated on the Aerodrome Traffic Frequency, UNICOM, at 122.7 MHz. An additional frequency of 128.175 MHz is listed for aerodrome (A/D) use. Pilot-activated aerodrome lighting is provided via ARCAL Type K, keyed on 122.9 MHz, allowing pilots to switch on the runway lights remotely when required.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As an uncontrolled aerodrome in Class E airspace, arriving and departing traffic should broadcast intentions and monitor the ATF/UNICOM frequency of 122.7 MHz throughout the approach, circuit, and departure phases, integrating with any other traffic using standard uncontrolled-airfield practice.

Visual Reference Points

The airport is located approximately 3.5 nautical miles east of the town of Smiths Falls, which together with the surrounding rural landscape of Montague Township provides the principal visual reference for locating and joining the field.

The Airfield Today

The airport is operated by volunteer members of the Smiths Falls Flying Club, which runs a flight training unit operating three Cessna 172M aircraft. Self-serve 100LL avgas is available on site via a credit card system. Prior permission (PPR) may be required for some operations at this small community aerodrome.
