Yellowknife International Airport (CYZF) serves Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories, from a site just south of the city on the shore of Great Slave Lake. It is a well-equipped northern hub with two paved runways, one served by an ILS, and full air traffic services, making it an interesting and useful stop for a simulator pilot exploring the Canadian sub-Arctic.

Overview

Yellowknife International Airport is the principal aerodrome for Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and functions as a regional hub for the territory. It has two hard-surfaced, lit runways, one of which is equipped with an instrument landing system, and is staffed with tower and ground control alongside a flight service station, giving it a more substantial infrastructure than most airfields this far north. For a simulator pilot it offers a good mix of IFR approach practice and VFR arrival into a compact northern city set against the lakes and forest of the Canadian Shield.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, at coordinates 62.463 N, 114.44 W, and sits at an elevation of 669 feet. Area control is provided by Edmonton Centre, reachable on 135.8 MHz, placing the field within Edmonton's high-level airspace structure for en-route traffic transiting the region.

Runways

The airport has two physical runways. Runway 16/34 is 7,467 feet long with a hard, lit surface, and runway 34 is served by an ILS. Runway 10/28 is approximately 4,975 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit. Both runways support night operations given their lighting.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic control is provided on tower frequency 118.5 MHz, which also doubles as the published A/G frequency; ground movements are handled on 121.9 MHz. The airport broadcasts an ATIS on 128.4 MHz, and a flight service station is available on 122.5 MHz. En-route traffic in the area works Edmonton Centre on 135.8 MHz. Runway 34 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

The Airfield Today

Yellowknife International Airport continues to operate as a controlled aerodrome with tower, ground and flight service station coverage, and is recorded as the home base for a number of pilots. Prior permission may be required for some operations at the field.
