Ain Beida Airport (ICAO: DAUU, IATA: OGX) serves the Saharan city of Ouargla in eastern Algeria, some 540 km southeast of Algiers. Operated as a dual public/military field by EGSA Alger, it offers two long hard-surfaced runways with an ILS, making it a notable waypoint for simulator pilots flying desert routes across the Sahara.
Ain Beida Airport, also known as Ouargla Airport, is a public and military aerodrome serving the city of Ouargla in the Ouargla Province of eastern Algeria. It is operated by EGSA Alger (Établissement de Gestion de Services Aéroportuaires d'Alger) and handles scheduled Air Algérie services to destinations including Adrar, Algiers, Constantine, Djanet, El Golea, Illizi, In Amenas, Oran and Tamanrasset. For the simulator pilot, its long desert runways, instrument approach and isolated Saharan setting make it an interesting stop on long-haul or regional Algerian routings.
The airport lies in the Sahara Desert of eastern Algeria, about 540 km southeast of Algiers and roughly 8 km (4.3 nautical miles) southeast of the town of Ouargla itself. The surrounding terrain is flat, arid desert typical of the region, with the Ouargla VOR-DME and non-directional beacon sited to the north of the field and aligned with the runways.
The airport has two physical runways, both hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 01/19 is approximately 9,879 ft in the 01 direction and 9,708 ft in the 19 direction. Runway 18/36 measures approximately 9,815 ft in both directions and is equipped with an ILS on runway 36. Field elevation is 479 ft.
No published communications frequencies are recorded for the field. Navigational aids include the Ouargla (OUR) VOR-DME and the Ouargla (OU) non-directional beacon, both positioned north of the airport and aligned with the runway layout, together with an ILS serving runway 36.
During the Second World War the site was known as Sedrata Airfield and was used by the United States Twelfth Air Force during the Western Desert Campaign of 1942-1943. The 17th Bombardment Group, flying Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses, was based there from 10 May to 23 June 1943, followed by the 319th Bombardment Group with Martin B-26 Marauders from 1 to 26 June 1943.
The airport continues to function as a public and military aerodrome under EGSA Alger, with Air Algérie operating scheduled services to a range of domestic and regional Algerian destinations.
