Djerba–Zarzis International Airport sits on the western side of Djerba island in southern Tunisia, close to the small town of Mellita and about nine kilometres west of the island's capital, Houmt Souk. It is a busy seasonal gateway for European charter and scheduled traffic, built around a single long instrument runway equipped with ILS, and controlled by Djerba Approach and Tower.

Overview

Djerba–Zarzis International Airport (IATA: DJE, ICAO: DTTJ) is the main air gateway to the resort island of Djerba off the south-eastern coast of Tunisia. It is operated by the Tunisian Civil Aviation and Airports Authority and functions largely as a seasonal holiday airport, funnelling European tourist traffic onto the island. For a simulator pilot it offers a long, well-equipped ILS runway set against the flat, sandy coastal terrain of Djerba, with the town of Mellita close by and Houmt Souk a short distance to the east.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies on the western part of Djerba island, in the Médenine Governorate of Tunisia, near the small town of Mellita and roughly nine kilometres west of Houmt Souk, the island's principal town. It is served by Djerba Approach and Djerba Tower, indicating that the field sits within controlled airspace appropriate to a large international airport handling scheduled and charter traffic to and from Europe.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 09/27, orientated almost exactly east-west. It is a hard-surfaced runway some 10,136 feet long and is lit for night operations. Runway 09 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches from the east.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided by Djerba Approach, callsign DJERBA APP, on 120.3 MHz, and Djerba Tower, callsign DJERBA TWR, on 118.15 MHz. An ILS is available on runway 09 for instrument approaches.

History

The airfield's origins go back to 1950, when it opened as Djerba Mellita airport. It was subsequently enlarged and renamed Djerba Zarzis International Airport in 1970, a development undertaken specifically to bring tourists directly onto the island. The passenger terminal was upgraded in 2007 to a three-level building to cope with growing traffic.

The Airfield Today

Djerba–Zarzis functions today primarily as a seasonal airport linking European visitors to Djerba, with a single terminal handling scheduled and charter services and a stated capacity of more than four million passengers a year. It remains an active international airport with full air traffic control provided by Djerba Approach and Tower.
