Heringsdorf Airport lies on the Baltic island of Usedom, close to the Polish border and the town of Świnoujście, and takes its name from the resort of Heringsdorf some ten kilometres to the north. Once an East German air force base, it now combines seasonal airline services with general aviation on a substantial paved runway alongside two grass strips, making it a distinctive stop for visiting pilots.

Overview

Heringsdorf Airport serves the island of Usedom in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, and is operated by Flughafen Heringsdorf GmbH. Once a Cold War-era airbase of the East German National People's Army, it today handles seasonal airline flights alongside general aviation traffic, giving it an unusual character for a field of its size: a long, lit, ILS-equipped hard runway sits beside two grass strips more typical of a light-aviation airfield. For a simulator pilot it offers an interesting mix of scheduled-airline infrastructure and classic grass-runway flying on a Baltic island close to the Polish frontier.

Airspace & Location

The airport is situated near Garz on Usedom island, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, close to the German-Polish border. The largest town on the island, Świnoujście, lies in Poland immediately to the east of the field, while the resort town of Heringsdorf, after which the airport is named, lies around ten kilometres to the north. The nearest major international airport is Berlin, roughly 200 kilometres to the south.

Runways

Heringsdorf has three physical runways. The main runway, 10/28, is 7,501-7,502 feet long with a hard surface, lit, and equipped with an ILS on runway 28. Alongside it are two grass runways: 10L/28R, at 3,850 feet, and the shorter 10R/28L, at 2,054 feet. Field elevation is 82 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic is worked on 132.65 MHz as Langen Information (AFIS) and on 132.83 MHz as Heringsdorf Radio / Heringsdorf Tower (Turm). Runway 28 is served by an ILS.

History

Heringsdorf Airport began life as an airbase of the East German National People's Army, reflecting the strategic value of its position on Usedom island near the Baltic coast and the Polish border. Following German reunification the site was redeveloped as a civilian regional airport, retaining its long paved runway from its military days while gaining the grass strips, terminal building and apron facilities that support today's mixed airline and general aviation operations.

The Airfield Today

The airport features a single small terminal with check-in facilities and an information desk, an apron stand suitable for a mid-sized aircraft such as an Airbus A319, and several stands for smaller general aviation types such as the Cessna 172. By winter 2015 it had been equipped with renewed firefighting and security facilities and a refurbished check-in area. Seasonal scheduled and charter services have included Lufthansa to Frankfurt, Luxair to Luxembourg, Mannheim City Air to Mannheim, MHS Aviation to Friedrichshafen and Kassel, and Swiss International Air Lines to Zurich, operating alongside general aviation traffic.
