Kamenz Airfield (EDCM) is a small general aviation airfield in Saxony, Germany, about 40 km northeast of Dresden near the town of Kamenz. Once a Luftwaffe and later East German Air Force base, it now serves light aircraft operations from a single hard-surfaced runway.
Kamenz Airfield lies just northeast of the town of Kamenz in the Bautzen district of Saxony, roughly 40 km northeast of Dresden. It began life as a military airfield and today functions as a general aviation field, home to the FC Kamenz flying club. For a sim pilot the appeal lies chiefly in its history as a frontline Luftwaffe base and later a Cold War-era East German Air Force training establishment, set against the pastoral Upper Lusatian landscape.
The airfield sits at coordinates 51.297, 14.1275 at an elevation of 492 ft, immediately northeast of the town of Kamenz in the Bautjen (Bautzen) district of Saxony. It lies within reach of the wider Langen Information flight information service area, and Berlin Radar is available for traffic and radar service in the vicinity, indicating the field operates within a broadly uncontrolled airspace environment supported by an aerodrome flight information service rather than full air traffic control.
Kamenz has a single physical runway, 03/21, aligned roughly northeast-southwest. It measures 3605 ft and has a hard surface with runway lighting, making it usable for both day and night light aircraft operations.
Kamenz Radio provides an information service on 128.11 MHz. Wider-area flight information is available from Langen Information on 125.8 MHz (AFIS), and Berlin Radar can be contacted on 126.175 MHz for traffic and radar advisory service. There is no ILS at the field, so approaches are flown visually.
The airfield northeast of Kamenz town was used during the Second World War by Luftwaffe units Schlachtgeschwader 2 and Sturzkampfgeschwader 77. Following the war, with the town falling within the Soviet occupation zone and subsequently East Germany, the airfield became the site of an officer candidate school of the East German Air Force Staff, the Offiziershochschule Franz Mehring, which operated there until 1990. The field was also used by the pre-military sport and technical organisation Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik (GST). As with several other secondary airfields of the former East German National People's Army, Kamenz was assigned a radio call sign, KONSTANZ, formed from the first and last letters of the town's name.
Kamenz Airfield today supports general aviation flying under the auspices of the FC Kamenz flying club, which maintains a web presence for the field. It is recorded as the home base for a small number of based aircraft, reflecting its continued use as a light aviation field rather than a major operational aerodrome.
