Cologne Bonn Airport (EDDK) is a major international hub in western Germany, serving the Cologne-Bonn region with a full suite of ILS-equipped runways and round-the-clock operations. Located within the Wahner Heide nature reserve southeast of Cologne, it combines dense airline traffic with cargo hub activity for FedEx and UPS, making it a busy and instructive destination for the simulator pilot flying IFR or VFR in controlled airspace.
Cologne Bonn Airport, known in German as Flughafen Köln/Bonn 'Konrad Adenauer', is a large international airport serving Cologne, Germany's fourth-largest city, and the former West German capital Bonn. It is one of Germany's few 24-hour airports and functions as a hub for Eurowings, FedEx Express and UPS Airlines, giving it a distinctive mix of passenger and heavy cargo traffic that makes it an interesting study for pilots flying into busy, ILS-served controlled airspace.
The airport lies in the Porz district, 12 km southeast of Cologne city centre and 16 km northeast of Bonn, surrounded by the Wahner Heide nature reserve. It sits within German controlled airspace under Langen Information/Radar, and is one of the country's principal hubs, with Düsseldorf Airport around 49 km to the north and Frankfurt Airport also within relatively easy reach, both factors a pilot should bear in mind when planning routings in the region.
Cologne Bonn has three physical runways. The main runway, 13L/31R, is 12,490 to 12,491 feet long, hard-surfaced, lit and equipped with ILS. A second parallel runway, 13R/31L, is 6,107 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit. The third runway, 06/24, is 8,031 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, with ILS available on runway 24. Field elevation is 249 feet.
Traffic at Cologne Bonn is worked by Langen Information on AFIS frequency 129.875 MHz. The airport ATIS broadcasts on 132.13 MHz. Koeln/Bonn Delivery operates on 121.855 MHz, Ground/Rollkontrolle on 121.73 MHz, and Koeln/Bonn Tower/Turm on 124.98 MHz. A direction-finding frequency is listed on 121.05 MHz, with a miscellaneous/apron post frequency on 121.95 MHz and 136.25 MHz respectively. Langen Radar covers the wider area on 118.75 MHz, and Bremen VOLMET can be received on 127.41 MHz. Instrument approaches are available, with ILS serving runways 31R, 13L and 24.
Cologne Bonn Airport has grown into the seventh-largest passenger airport in Germany and the third-largest by cargo volume, reflecting its dual role as an airline hub and a major freight centre for FedEx Express and UPS Airlines. The airport is also notable as the site of a training centre for the German (DLR) and European (EAC) astronaut programmes, part of the European Space Agency. An Airbus A300 'Zero G', formerly used by the German Aerospace Center to simulate weightlessness for research flights, is preserved near Terminal 2 as an interactive museum exhibit, a tangible link to the airport's aerospace research heritage.
Cologne Bonn continues to operate as a 24-hour international airport with substantial passenger and cargo traffic, serving as a hub for Eurowings, FedEx Express and UPS Airlines and a focus city for several leisure and low-cost carriers. As of March 2015 the airport had services to 115 passenger destinations in 35 countries. Its scale and continuous operations make it a demanding but rewarding destination for simulator pilots seeking realistic exposure to mixed airline and cargo operations in German controlled airspace.
