Munich Airport (EDDM), officially Flughafen München "Franz Josef Strauß", is a major international hub serving Bavaria from a site north-east of the city near Freising. It is Germany's second-busiest airport and the principal Lufthansa hub, offering two long, parallel hard-surfaced runways equipped with ILS, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for instrument approaches in the simulator.

Overview

Munich Airport is a large international airport serving the city of Munich and the surrounding region of Upper and Lower Bavaria. It opened on 17 May 1992, replacing the former Munich-Riem Airport, and today operates as the principal hub for Lufthansa. For a simulator pilot it is of interest as a major European hub with two long parallel runways, full ILS coverage, and a complex, layered ATC and apron structure typical of a large hub airport.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies around 28.5 km (17.7 mi) north-east of central Munich, near the town of Freising. As a major hub it sits within controlled airspace with its own approach, tower and ground services, and traffic in the area is coordinated through Langen Information as well as the airport's own area control, radar, arrival, director and tower positions.

Runways

Munich has two parallel physical runways, both hard-surfaced and lit, and both equipped with ILS. The northern runway pair, 08R/26L, is 13,091 ft (26L direction 13,090 ft) in length, while the southern pair, 08L/26R, measures 13,088 ft in both directions.

Radio & Navigation

Munich provides a full range of ATC services. Area control (ACC) is on 123.9 MHz, with radar/AFIS traffic on 120.65 MHz and Langen Information also available on 126.95 MHz. Arrival control (ARR) operates on 120.775 MHz, with LCL RADAR on 131.225 MHz and Director (DIR) on 118.825 MHz. Ground movement (Rollkontrolle) is split across 121.83 MHz and 121.98 MHz, with apron (Vorfeld) control on 121.71 MHz, 121.78 MHz and 121.93 MHz. Tower operates across three positions: Tower North on 118.705 MHz, the main Tower on 119.405 MHz, and Tower South on 120.505 MHz. Delivery (Muenchen Delivery) is on 121.73 MHz, the ATIS broadcast (Muenchen ATIS) is on 123.13 MHz, and Frankfurt 2 VOLMET can be received on 135.78 MHz. Both runway pairs are served by ILS.

History

Munich Airport opened on 17 May 1992, the same day that its predecessor, Munich-Riem Airport, closed; the IATA code MUC and ICAO code EDDM were transferred to the new field. The airport is named after Franz Josef Strauß. Terminal 2 opened in June 2003 as a dedicated facility for Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners, and the Terminal 2 Satellite building followed in April 2016. The airport grew steadily through the following decades, surpassing 40 million passengers for the first time in 2015 and recording 46.2 million passengers and 413,000 aircraft movements in 2018, serving 266 destinations. By 2024 it was handling 41.6 million passengers a year, making it the second-busiest airport in Germany after Frankfurt and the eleventh-busiest in Europe.

The Airfield Today

Munich Airport remains a major international hub and the principal base for Lufthansa, with a wide network of scheduled airline services. It continues to expand its infrastructure, including new terminal piers, and functions as a large-scale commercial airport with full instrument approach capability on both of its long parallel runways.
