Nuremberg Airport (EDDN), marketed as Albrecht Dürer Airport, lies some five kilometres north of Nuremberg's city centre in Bavaria and is the second-busiest airport in the German state after Munich. It is a fully controlled, ILS-equipped international airport built around a single long hard-surfaced runway, making it a straightforward if busy destination for a simulated approach into Franconia.
Nuremberg Airport serves the Franconian metropolitan area surrounding Nuremberg and is operated by Flughafen Nürnberg GmbH, owned in equal shares by the state of Bavaria and the city of Nuremberg. It handles scheduled and leisure traffic across Europe, the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, Turkey and Egypt, and is a base for Corendon Airlines Europe, Marabu and Ryanair. For a simulator pilot it offers a compact, single-runway international field with full ILS approaches and a busy, professionally controlled traffic environment close to a historic Bavarian city.
EDDN sits in controlled airspace in Bavaria, Germany, roughly five kilometres north of Nuremberg's city centre. The aeronautical data lists Langen Information frequencies alongside the airport's own tower, ground, approach and radar services, reflecting its position within the wider Langen flight information region and its handling by both Nürnberg and München area control.
The airport has a single physical runway, 10/28, 8,840 feet long with a hard surface. Both runway ends are lit and equipped with ILS, allowing precision approaches from either direction.
Nuremberg's frequencies are Nürnberg Tower (Turm) on 118.305 MHz, Nürnberg Ground (Rollkontrolle) on 121.76 MHz, Nürnberg Director approach on 119.475 MHz, and Nuernberg ATIS on 123.08 MHz. München Radar is available on 129.525 MHz, and Berlin VOLMET can be received on 128.405 MHz for regional weather. Langen Information, the wider flight information service, is on 120.65 MHz and 125.8 MHz. Both runway ends carry ILS, supporting instrument approaches to 10 and 28.
The airport lies about five kilometres north of Nuremberg's city centre. The site of the former Nuremberg-Marienberg military airfield, closed after the Second World War and now a public park, lies a short distance due south, while the old Atzenhof airfield near Fürth, now a golf course, lies to the west; both can serve as orientation points when approaching the area from the south or west.
Before the present airport opened, Nuremberg's air traffic passed through a succession of earlier fields: a 1915 Bavarian Army airfield at Atzenhof near Fürth, and the Nazi-era Marienberg Airport opened in the 1930s, which served an openly military role once the Luftwaffe was established in 1935 and was largely destroyed during the war. After 1945 the American occupying forces improvised a runway on the main boulevard of the former Nazi Party Rallying Grounds, used among other things for flights connected with the Nuremberg trials, while civilian passenger traffic from 1950 used a private airfield at Fürth-Hardhöhe. The current airport opened on 6 April 1955, the first airport built in West Germany after the war, and passenger numbers passed 100,000 for the first time in 1960. The runway was extended from 1,900 to 2,300 metres in 1961 and to its present length of 2,700 metres in 1968, enabling Boeing 747 operations; the type first landed at Nuremberg on 12 July 1970, drawing 20,000 spectators. One of the Lufthansa 747s that visited the airport in this period later crashed as Lufthansa Flight 540 in 1974. Turkish Airlines has served Nuremberg regularly since 1973, and in 1969 the airport handled diverted traffic while Munich-Riem's main runway was closed for maintenance.
Nuremberg remains an active international airport, recording 4,508,700 passengers in 2025, its highest total to date and making it Germany's ninth-busiest airport that year. It is a base for Corendon Airlines Europe, Marabu and Ryanair, and continues to see occasional heavy freight traffic, including large cargo aircraft, alongside scheduled passenger services.
