Bremen Airport (ICAO: EDDW) is the international airport serving the Hanseatic city of Bremen in northern Germany, sited about 3.5 km south of the city centre. It combines a full-length ILS-equipped main runway with airline and general aviation traffic, and has a long history stretching back to the early days of German aviation.

Overview

Bremen Airport, known by the ICAO code EDDW, is the international airport of the city and state of Bremen in northern Germany. It handles scheduled airline services alongside general aviation and has historically been a base for Lufthansa's pilot training operations, giving it a mixed traffic pattern that is of interest to a visiting VFR or IFR sim pilot. Its combination of a long instrument runway and a shorter crosswind strip makes it a useful and varied destination for light aircraft as well as jet traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies close to the city of Bremen, around 3.5 km (2.2 miles) south of the centre, in northern Germany. It sits within controlled airspace appropriate to a major regional airport, with approach and tower services provided as detailed below; pilots operating VFR in the vicinity should expect to be worked into the surrounding controlled airspace structure around Bremen.

Runways

Bremen has two physical runways. The main runway, 09/27, is 7660/7640 ft long, has a hard surface, is lit, and is equipped with ILS on both directions. The secondary runway, 05/23, is 2293 ft long, also hard-surfaced and lit, providing a shorter crosswind option for lighter traffic.

Radio & Navigation

Bremen Tower operates on 120.33 MHz and 134.83 MHz, with Bremen Ground on 121.755 MHz. Bremen ATIS broadcasts on 132.38 MHz, and Bremen VOLMET is available on 147.41 MHz. Approach/Radar is on 124.8 MHz. Langen Information provides AFIS on 125.1 MHz and 128.525 MHz. The main runway is equipped with an ILS, supporting instrument approaches to Bremen.

History

The origins of Bremen Airport date back to the early twentieth century, when the Bremer Verein für Luftschiffahrt, a local aerospace club, carried out experimental flights at the site in the summer of 1910 on what was then a garrison parade ground. The Senate of Bremen backed the creation of an airfield to link the city into the growing airship route network. In 1945 the United States Army took over the airport and the adjacent aircraft plant for use as an airbase, operating transport aircraft into and out of the American enclave within otherwise British-occupied northern Germany, before control was handed back to the Bremen authorities in 1949. In the mid-1950s the terminal buildings were rebuilt and Lufthansa began scheduled flights from the airport, also establishing its pilot training operation, Lufthansa Flight Training, there. Scheduled jet services began during the 1960s. In January 2016 the airport operator announced a major redesign and renovation of the terminal building, completed by 2018, which merged the former Terminal 1, 2 and 3 sections; in May 2016 the airport adopted a new brand, becoming Bremen Airport in place of the earlier City Airport Bremen name.

The Airfield Today

Bremen Airport continues to operate as a working international airport with scheduled airline traffic alongside general aviation movements. The airport publishes dedicated pilot information for general aviation operators, and prior permission may be required for visiting light aircraft, as is typical for an airport of this size.
