Reichelsheim Airfield (EDFB) is a general aviation aerodrome in Hesse, some 25 kilometres north of Frankfurt am Main, notable as a permanent base for medevac and VIP helicopter operations. It offers a lit hard-surface main runway alongside a short grass strip, making it a useful stop for both fixed-wing and rotary traffic in the region.

Overview

Reichelsheim Airfield lies near the town of Reichelsheim in the Wetterau district of Hesse, about 25 kilometres north of Frankfurt am Main. It is a public general aviation aerodrome operated by Flugplatz Reichelsheim-Wetterau GmbH+Co KG, and its role extends beyond routine light aircraft traffic: the field also functions as an important heliport for medevac and VIP transport, with Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. maintaining a round-the-clock presence with its medevac helicopters Christoph Hessen and Christoph Rhein-Main.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits in Hesse, roughly 25 kilometres north of Frankfurt am Main, placing it within the wider Frankfurt regional airspace environment. No further detail on airspace classification or the aerodrome's specific traffic zone is available.

Runways

Reichelsheim has one physical hard-surfaced runway, 18/36, lit, with a length of 4024 feet when used as runway 18 and 4243 feet when used as runway 36. A second, shorter physical runway, 08/26, is grass-surfaced, 791 feet long, and unlit. There is no ILS at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic is served by an AFIS frequency of 119.15 MHz, identified as Langen Information, and an information frequency of 120.43 MHz, identified as Reichelsheim Radio.

History

Reichelsheim Airfield was developed as a public general aviation aerodrome in Hesse. Its main runway, designated 18/36, is asphalt-paved and equipped with runway and taxiway illumination, PAPI, REIL and an approach lighting system, reflecting a level of infrastructure investment beyond that of a typical small grass field. The airfield has become established as a significant heliport, hosting Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V.'s medevac helicopters Christoph Hessen and Christoph Rhein-Main on a 24-hour, 365-day basis, alongside use for VIP helicopter transport.

The Airfield Today

The aerodrome remains active for general aviation, with aircraft up to 8,000 kilograms permitted to operate from the main runway. There are no scheduled airline services to or from Reichelsheim. Its continuing importance lies in its role as a base for emergency medical helicopter operations and VIP helicopter transport, supported by the runway and taxiway lighting, PAPI, REIL and approach lighting system on runway 18/36.
