Rothenburg ob der Tauber Airfield (EDFR) is a small general aviation field near Schweinsdorf, just outside the historic Bavarian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, home to the Aero Club Rothenburg. It offers a single lit hard-surfaced runway and is popular with local clubs for both powered flying and parachuting.

Overview

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Airfield is a small, club-run aerodrome serving the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria. It has no scheduled airline service and functions primarily as a base for private and club flying, including the Aero Club Rothenburg and a parachuting club, making it a characterful destination for visiting VFR pilots exploring this well-known corner of Bavaria.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies near the village of Schweinsdorf, close to Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria, Germany. It sits within an area served by Langen Information flight information services, consistent with uncontrolled airspace typical of small German airfields of this type.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 03/21, with a hard surface and runway lighting. Published lengths are 3,263 ft for runway 03 and 3,107 ft for the reciprocal runway 21, broadly in line with the roughly 950-metre paved strip described locally.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic in the area can use Langen Information on 119.15 MHz, while the airfield's own frequency is Rothenburg Radio on 128.36 MHz. There is no ILS at the field.

History

The airfield has a flying tradition dating back to 1962 and has long been maintained by local enthusiasts, notably the members of the Aero Club Rothenburg eV. It has also become associated with parachuting activity through the Parachuting Club Oberhausen eV, whose jumps have been flown from Rothenburg using a Cessna 182 based at the field.

The Airfield Today

Today the airfield remains the home of the Aero Club Rothenburg and continues to support general aviation flying alongside recreational parachuting, with Sky Dive City offering tandem jumps departing from the field on weekends and public holidays. The site is easily reached on foot or by bike from the town and is regarded locally as a pleasant spot to watch flying activity as well as to fly from.
