The airfield was opened in 1970 as a commercial airfield. Since 1 September 2006 the airfield site and its associated infrastructure have been operated by Flugplatzgesellschaft Arnsberg-Menden mbH. Air sports club Arnsberg e.V. has been based at the field since 1975 and has run an approved flying school there for more than thirty years. The airfield building underwent extensive renovation in 2011/2012, after which it was given a modern corrugated sheet metal facade inspired by the design of the Junkers Ju 52 aircraft.
Arnsberg-Menden is designated as a priority airfield for individual business air traffic in the air traffic concept of North Rhine-Westphalia, with around 12,000 movements per year. There are no scheduled or charter flights, but the field is approved for federal police and customs border clearance, including non-Schengen traffic, and serves commercial enterprises for fast return flights to customers, suppliers and company branches. Two air sports clubs are based there, the Luftsportclub (LSC) Arnsberg and the Luftsportgemeinschaft Westfalen (LSGW), both operating club aircraft, and LSC Arnsberg runs an approved flying school (approval number DE.NRW.ATO.201MS) offering private pilot training. An aviation technology company based at the field carries out aircraft maintenance and repair. A wide range of fuel is available for police, rescue, business and general aviation pilots, and more than two dozen full-time and part-time staff work at the airfield.
