Augsburg Airport (EDMA) lies at Affing, some seven kilometres northeast of Augsburg and about an hour from Munich by autobahn, and serves as a business and general aviation field with a CAT I ILS runway. Once a scheduled-service airport with routes across Germany, it has since 2005 handled almost exclusively general aviation and business traffic, offering customs and immigration clearance on site. For the simulator pilot it offers an interesting mix of a hard-surfaced instrument runway alongside a parallel grass strip used for lighter traffic and glider operations.

Overview

Augsburg Airport, ICAO code EDMA, is a regional aerodrome at Affing, about 7 kilometres northeast of the city of Augsburg in Bavaria and roughly 60 kilometres from Munich via the A8 autobahn. Operated by Augsburger Flughafen GmbH, it is used for business and general aviation with very little scheduled passenger traffic. It offers CAT I instrument approach capability, on-site customs and immigration clearance, and no slot restrictions, making it a practical and uncomplicated destination for pilots heading into the Augsburg/Munich region.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits close to the city of Augsburg and within easy reach of the Munich conurbation, connected by the six-lane A8 motorway (Munich around 25 minutes, Stuttgart around an hour, via the Augsburg Ost exit). It is served by Langen Information for area traffic information and by Munich Radar, alongside its own tower/AFIS unit, reflecting its role as a general and business aviation field close to busier Munich airspace.

Runways

Augsburg has two physical runways. The main runway, 07/25, is a hard-surfaced, lit runway of 4754 feet on runway 07 and 4657 feet on runway 25, with an ILS serving the approach to runway 25. A second, parallel grass runway, 07R/25L, is lit and measures 3156 feet, used alongside the main paved runway. Field elevation is 1512 feet, at coordinates 48.4252N, 10.9318E.

Radio & Navigation

Langen Information provides area flight information on AFIS frequency 120.65 MHz. The airport's ATIS broadcasts on 119.665 MHz, and Munich Radar (RDR) can be contacted on 128.25 MHz. Augsburg Tower (Augsburg Turm) operates on 124.98 MHz, which also serves as the VDF frequency. Runway 25 is equipped with an ILS, giving Category I instrument approach capability into the field.

History

Augsburg Airport grew out of scheduled operations by Interot Airways, which by the early 1990s operated routes from Augsburg to Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Hamburg and Leipzig, positioning the airport as an alternative for business travellers wishing to avoid busy Munich Airport. After Interot became part of Team Lufthansa in 1996 and was renamed Augsburg Airways, the carrier progressively shifted its operations to Munich Airport, and its last routes from Augsburg ended in 2002. Following the further relocation of passenger traffic to Munich Airport after 2005, the Augsburg region was left without a dedicated passenger airport nearby, and Augsburg Airport has since been used almost entirely for general aviation and business aircraft. As of September 2019 there were no scheduled or charter flights operating from the field.

The Airfield Today

Augsburg Airport today functions primarily as a business and general aviation field. Its runway has been renewed, extended and grooved, and the airport operates without slot restrictions, allowing operators to determine their own departure and arrival times. Standard operating hours are Monday to Saturday 07:00 to 21:00 local time and Sunday/public holidays 09:00 to 21:00 local time; flights outside these hours require prior permission (PPR) and are subject to a charge. The airport holds status as an airport of entry, with customs and immigration clearance completed on site, and offers CAT I ILS approach capability. Car parking is available free of charge for visitors, and rental cars are available from Sixt and Europcar at the field.
