The airfield has a long-standing aerospace heritage: during the post-Second World War Allied occupation of Germany it was designated the Oberpfaffenhofen Air Force Depot, and it served as a maintenance depot for aircraft used during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. It later became closely associated with Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH, which shared the airfield with the DLR, and with the broader development of German aerospace research; Dornier's successor activities continued at the site under Fairchild Dornier before the company's insolvency. The nearby German Space Operations Center at Oberpfaffenhofen played a role in West Germany's early human spaceflight involvement, helping supervise the 1983 Spacelab mission that carried the first West German astronaut, Ulf Merbold, into orbit.
Oberpfaffenhofen remains a special and research airport, described by its operator as unique in Germany for combining research, development and qualified business flight operations. It forms the centerpiece of the Airtech Campus Oberpfaffenhofen, where around 8,000 people work across the wider site and around 4,000 at the airport itself, alongside the neighbouring DLR facility and numerous aerospace companies and institutions covering the full process chain from research and development to production, flight operations and maintenance. The airport offers charter flight operations for aeroplanes and helicopters and aircraft storage and hangarage facilities, and its operator states that pilots are welcome, with pilot information provided for those planning a visit.
