Mengen-Hohentengen Airfield (EDTM) is a general aviation aerodrome near Mengen in Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany, offering a hard-surfaced main runway alongside a grass strip. It sits within its own radio mandatory zone (RMZ Mengen) and has become notable as a dedicated test site for unmanned aircraft operations alongside conventional light aviation traffic.

Overview

Mengen-Hohentengen Airfield lies close to the town of Mengen in Baden-Württemberg and serves as a general aviation field with a paved main runway and a parallel grass strip. Beyond conventional powered and glider flying, the airfield has taken on a specialised role as a test site for unmanned aerial systems, operated in this capacity by AREA BW e.V., which makes it a somewhat unusual and interesting destination for a simulator pilot exploring German regional airfields.

Airspace & Location

The airfield is located in a rural part of Baden-Württemberg, in the vicinity of Mengen, and is surrounded by a radio mandatory zone known as RMZ Mengen. Flight activity associated with the site's drone-testing operations is limited to 500 feet AGL outside the RMZ and 1000 feet AGL within it, giving an indication of the local airspace ceiling pilots should expect at low level around the field.

Runways

Mengen-Hohentengen has two physical runways. The main runway, 07/25, is a hard surface fitted with lighting, with a landing distance of 4148 feet available on runway 07 and 5132 feet on runway 25. A secondary runway, 07L/25R, is grass, also lit, with a length of 2301 feet in both directions.

Radio & Navigation

The airfield is served by an AFIS station, Mengen Information, on 135.180 MHz. Zürich Information, a flight information service frequency covering the wider region, is also available on 124.700 MHz for en-route traffic advisories. No instrument approach or ILS is available at the field.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

Specific published joining and circuit procedures are not detailed here, but pilots operating in the vicinity should note the airfield's radio mandatory zone, RMZ Mengen, and the associated low-level height restrictions of 500 feet AGL outside the zone and 1000 feet AGL within it that apply to activity in the surrounding airspace.

The Airfield Today

Mengen-Hohentengen supports general aviation flying alongside its role as a designated test site for unmanned aircraft, run by AREA BW e.V. The site includes an aircraft hangar with office space and workshop facilities for users of the test area, and it holds permission for both visual line-of-sight and beyond-visual-line-of-sight drone operations across a multi-kilometre area around the airfield. Prior permission is required for use of the test site facilities.
