Emden Airport (EDWE) is a small public airfield on the North Sea coast of East Frisia, serving the city of Emden in Lower Saxony, Germany. Operated as part of the Aviation Park North Sea complex, it functions as a regional hub for flights to the Frisian Islands and helicopter support for the North Sea's offshore wind industry, making it a useful and characterful stop for a VFR sim pilot exploring the German coast.

Overview

Emden Airport, known locally as Flugplatz Emden, is a public airfield serving the city of Emden in the East Frisia region of Lower Saxony. It is operated by Flugplatz Emden GmbH under the Aviation Park North Sea banner, which positions the field as a transport and logistics node linking the German mainland with the Frisian Islands and the offshore wind farms of the North Sea. For a simulator pilot, its coastal setting, mix of light general aviation and helicopter operations, and island-hopping traffic give it a distinctive flavour among Germany's smaller aerodromes.

Airspace & Location

Emden Airport lies at Emden, on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony in the East Frisia region, close to the Ems estuary. Radio coverage in the area includes Langen Information, Wittmund/Jever Radar and Bremen Radar, reflecting the field's position within the wider Bremen FIR structure and its proximity to military and civil radar services covering the North Sea coast.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway aligned 07/25, both directions hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 25 is 3,925 feet long and runway 07 is 3,602 feet long. There is no ILS at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Emden Airport operates with AFIS rather than full air traffic control. Published frequencies are: AFIS on 128.525 MHz (Langen Information), approach on 123.6 MHz (Wittmund/Jever Radar), an information frequency on 118.605 MHz (Emden Information), and a radar frequency on 124.65 MHz (Bremen Radar). There is no ILS approach available at the field.

History

Emden Airport has traditionally served as a regional airfield for the city of Emden and the East Frisian coast, historically supporting scheduled and charter flights to the Frisian Islands such as Borkum and Juist. In more recent years it has been developed under the Aviation Park North Sea concept as a combined aviation and industrial site, and Flugplatz Emden GmbH is a member of the Interessengemeinschaft der regionalen Flugplätzen e.V. (IDRF), an association founded in 2005 that brings together more than seventy regional airfields and aviation-related companies in Germany and Switzerland to represent members' interests and support regional aviation infrastructure.

The Airfield Today

Today Emden Airport is marketed as the Aviation Park North Sea, described by its operator as the leading aviation and logistics location on the German North Sea coast, combining airfield operations with an adjoining business park geared toward the offshore industry. It supports island-hopping flights to the Frisian Islands and helicopter shuttle operations to North Sea wind farms alongside general aviation and business flying. Published opening hours vary by season: in summer the field operates Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 20:00 local time and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 08:00 to 18:00; in winter it operates Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00 and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 09:00 to 17:00. Operations outside these published hours require prior permission (PPR).
