JadeWeser Airport (EDWI) is a small unscheduled airfield at Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony, Germany, sited close to the JadeWeserPort deep-sea harbour development. It offers a hard-surfaced main runway suitable for light aircraft and general aviation traffic, though it no longer sees any scheduled passenger services.

Overview

JadeWeser Airport lies on the edge of Wilhelmshaven, in the Sande area of Lower Saxony, close to the JadeWeserPort deep-sea harbour construction site. It is classed as a minor unscheduled airport, used for general aviation rather than airline traffic, and last saw scheduled passenger flights in August 2018. For a simulator pilot it is an interesting north German coastal destination, with a mix of a longer hard runway and a shorter crosswind strip, set against the industrial backdrop of the port and the flat Frisian coastline.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits near Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony, adjacent to the JadeWeserPort site on the Jade Bay coast. It carries the IATA code WVN alongside its ICAO identifier EDWI.

Runways

JadeWeser Airport has two paved runways. The main runway, 02/20, is a hard, lit surface roughly 4,033 feet long. A shorter crosswind runway, 16/34, is also hard-surfaced and lit, at approximately 1,839 feet. There is no instrument landing system at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at JadeWeser Airport is worked on an AFIS frequency of 128.525 MHz, with the airfield service using the callsign Wilhelmshaven Information. A separate flight information service, Langen Information, is available on 129.255 MHz for wider area traffic advisories.

Visual Reference Points

The adjacent JadeWeserPort deep-sea harbour construction site is a prominent and unmistakable visual landmark for locating the airfield from the air, given its scale on the otherwise flat Jade Bay coastline near Wilhelmshaven.

History

JadeWeser Airport developed alongside the nearby JadeWeserPort project, a major German deep-sea harbour scheme, and for a period hosted scheduled passenger services, including flights operated by the airline yourways connecting the mainland with the North Sea islands. That scheduled service ended in August 2018, after which local commentary in Sande spoke of continuing belief in the potential of inter-island flying from the airport even without regular airline operations.

The Airfield Today

JadeWeser Airport continues to operate as a minor unscheduled airfield with no regular passenger flights since 2018, functioning today primarily for general aviation movements.
