Norderney Airport is a small public aerodrome serving the East Frisian island of Norderney in Lower Saxony, Germany, sited close to the island's lighthouse at the northern edge of the North Sea coast. Opened in 1970 as a faster year-round alternative to the ferry, it remains the island's principal air link and offers straightforward VFR access for visiting pilots.

Overview

Norderney Airport lies on the German North Sea island of Norderney, close to the island's lighthouse, and is operated by Flughafen Norderney GmbH. It was built to give the island a reliable air connection that, unlike the ferry, continues to function even when winter ice halts shipping. For a visiting VFR pilot it is a compact single-runway island field with a straightforward approach over open water and dune landscape, making it an interesting short-hop or island-hopping destination in the German Bight.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits on Norderney island in Lower Saxony, within German airspace and covered by Langen Information for area flight information service. As an island aerodrome it is surrounded by open North Sea and the Wadden Sea to landward, with no other airfields in close proximity on the island itself.

Runways

Norderney has a single physical runway, 08/26, aligned east-west. It has a hard surface and measures 3264 feet in length, and it is lit for night operations. There is no ILS available at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at Norderney is worked by Norderney Radio, an information service on 122.605 MHz. Langen Information, providing area flight information service, is available on 128.525 MHz. There is no instrument landing system at the field, so arrivals are conducted visually.

Visual Reference Points

The airfield is located near Norderney's lighthouse, a prominent landmark on the island that can assist in visually locating the field from the air.

History

The current airport was built to replace a makeshift airfield dating from 1954, itself a successor to the island's original airfield that had been converted into allotments after the Second World War. A new site near the island's lighthouse was chosen in 1965 because the earlier field suffered from difficult wind conditions, was prone to flooding, and had no room for expansion. Construction began in 1968 and the airport, together with its terminal building, opened in 1970. Within a year it was handling 30 daily connections, including long-distance routes to Bielefeld, Bremen, Dusseldorf and Hannover, and by 1971 it recorded 18,028 aircraft movements and 24,101 passengers. In 1974 the runway and taxiways were asphalted at a cost of DM 1.8 million, a year in which movements reached 20,000 and passengers 48,000. Airport lighting was installed in 1976 to permit night operations, and that year a Cessna 500 Citation operated by Ostfriesische Lufttransport became the first jet aircraft to land at the field. Traffic peaked in the mid-1980s, with 13,909 movements, 30,024 passengers and over 152 tonnes of freight recorded in 1985. The terminal building was refurbished by 1990, a year that saw 18,252 movements, 39,414 passengers and almost 240 tonnes of freight, while 1995 recorded 16,696 movements and 38,948 passengers.

The Airfield Today

As of March 2025 there are no regular scheduled commercial passenger flights to or from Norderney Airport, though the field continues to serve the island's air transport needs. The airport is operated by Flughafen Norderney GmbH.
