Hoherodskopf is a small grass airstrip sited at high elevation on the summit area of the Hoherodskopf, an extinct Miocene volcanic peak in the Vogelsberg range of Hesse, Germany, near the town of Schotten. With a single grass runway aligned 07/25, it sits well above the surrounding countryside, making it a distinctive if demanding destination for the VFR pilot.

Overview

Hoherodskopf is a modest grass airfield perched on the upper slopes of its namesake mountain, the Hoherodskopf, an extinct basaltic volcano and the second-highest point in the Vogelsberg range of Hesse. Its single short grass runway and considerable elevation set it apart from the low-lying fields typical of the region, giving it a character shaped as much by terrain as by aviation infrastructure.

Airspace & Location

The field lies in the Vogelsberg uplands of Hesse, close to the town of Schotten, on or near the summit area of the Hoherodskopf peak, which itself carries a telecommunications tower. The surrounding countryside is hilly and forested, typical of the Vogelsberg Naturpark, and pilots should expect the terrain to rise close to circuit height in the immediate vicinity of the strip.

Runways

The airfield has a single grass runway, oriented 07/25, measuring 2753 feet in length. There is no instrument landing system, and operations are visual only.

Visual Reference Points

The Hoherodskopf summit itself, topped by a prominent telecommunications tower, is a highly visible landmark for locating the field from the air, standing out above the wooded ridgelines of the Vogelsberg.
