Helsinki Vantaa (EFHK) is Finland's principal international airport, situated in Vantaa a short distance north of central Helsinki. It offers a complex of three physical runways with instrument approaches on most ends, making it a busy air transport hub of considerable interest to any pilot studying Finnish airspace.
Helsinki Vantaa Airport, identified by the ICAO code EFHK, lies in Vantaa in the Uusimaa region of southern Finland, just north of the city of Helsinki. It is the country's principal gateway for international air traffic and is built around three runways, giving it the layout and scale of a major hub airport rather than a general aviation field. For a simulator pilot, EFHK is of interest chiefly as a large, ILS-equipped hub with parallel and crossing runway operations rather than as a leisure destination.
The airport sits at coordinates 60.3172 N, 24.9633 E at an elevation of 151 feet, on the northern fringe of the Helsinki urban area in Vantaa. As Finland's main airline hub it lies within controlled airspace commensurate with a large international airport, and the field is depicted prominently on Finnish aeronautical charts.
Helsinki Vantaa has three physical runways. The main pair, 04R/22L, is a hard-surfaced, lit runway with declared lengths of 10,463 feet on the 04R threshold and 11,435 feet on the 22L threshold, and both ends are served by ILS. A second parallel runway, 04L/22R, is also hard-surfaced and lit, with a length of 10,007 feet from 04L and 9,823 feet from 22R, again with ILS available at both ends. The third runway, 15/33, is a hard, lit surface 9,499 feet in length; it carries an ILS on the 15 threshold, while runway 33 is lit but has no instrument landing system.
Approach control is provided on 119.1 MHz and 129.85 MHz. Delivery is on 118.125 MHz and ground on 121.8 MHz. Tower is split by runway use: 118.6 MHz serves runways 22L/04R and 15/33, while 118.85 MHz serves runway 22R/04L. The ATIS is broadcast on 135.075 MHz, with a further ATIS association on 114.2 MHz tied to the HEL VOR. A ramp frequency of 121.65 MHz and a PMSV (aerodrome meteorological) service on 125.1 MHz are also listed. Instrument approaches are available, with ILS serving runways 04R, 22L, 04L, 22R and 15.
