Joensuu Airport is a Finavia-operated regional airport in Liperi, eastern Finland, roughly 11 kilometres northwest of Joensuu city centre. It offers a long main runway with ILS approach and a shorter crosswind strip, making it a useful and well-equipped destination for both scheduled traffic and general aviation flights in North Karelia.

Overview

Joensuu Airport serves the city of Joensuu and the surrounding North Karelia region from a site in the municipality of Liperi, about 11 kilometres northwest of the Joensuu city centre. It is operated by Finavia, Finland's state airport operator, and has held scheduled links to Helsinki with Finnair. For a simulator pilot the field is notable for its substantial 2,500-metre main runway equipped with an ILS, giving it instrument-approach capability well beyond what its modest passenger traffic might suggest, alongside a shorter secondary runway for general aviation and crosswind use.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Liperi, Finland, close to the city of Joensuu in the North Karelia region, in the eastern part of the country. It sits at an elevation of 381 feet.

Runways

Joensuu has two physical runways. The main runway, 10/28, is 8,133 feet long with a hard surface, lit, and served by an ILS on the 28 approach. The secondary runway, 17/35, is 3,330 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit.

Radio & Navigation

The airport provides an ATIS on 115.7 MHz and a tower frequency of 120.9 MHz. Runway 28 is served by an ILS approach.

History

Joensuu Airport was established in 1937. It has long been operated by Finavia and hosts a Finnish Meteorological Institute weather station on the field; the highest natural air temperature ever recorded in Finland, 37.2 degrees Celsius, was measured there on 29 July 2010.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to handle scheduled traffic, with Finnair operating flights to Helsinki. It is operated by Finavia as a public airport serving the Joensuu region.
