Jyväskylä Airport lies at Tikkakoski, about 20 kilometres north of Jyväskylä city centre in the heart of Finland's Lake District, and has served as a military airfield since 1939 alongside its civil role. It offers a single long, lit runway with an ILS, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for VFR and IFR visitors to Central Finland.

Overview

Jyväskylä Airport (ICAO: EFJY, IATA: JYV) serves the university city of Jyväskylä and the surrounding Central Finland region from its location at Tikkakoski, some 20 kilometres north of the city centre. The field has deep roots in military aviation: it was founded as an air force base and today still hosts the Finnish Air Force Academy, whose flying operations make up a significant share of the airport's traffic alongside scheduled civil services. For a simulator pilot, the combination of a long ILS-equipped runway, an active military presence and a strong aviation heritage makes it an interesting and useful stop in the Finnish Lake District.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at Tikkakoski, within the municipality historically known as Jyväskylän Maalaiskunta, about 20 kilometres north of the centre of Jyväskylä in Central Finland. It is a controlled aerodrome with its own approach and tower services. The Finnish Air Force Academy's main campus lies about 5 kilometres from the airport, and the Aviation Museum of Central Finland is also nearby, both useful reference points when transiting the area (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jyv%C3%A4skyl%C3%A4_Airport).

Runways

Jyväskylä has a single physical runway, 12/30, aligned north-west/south-east. It is a hard-surfaced (asphalt), lit runway of roughly 8,490-8,491 feet in length, making it one of the longer runways among Finland's regional airports. An ILS is provided for runway 30, giving instrument approach capability from that direction. Field elevation is 430 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Jyväskylä provides an approach service on 119.7 MHz, an ATIS broadcast on 134.15 MHz, and a tower frequency of 118 MHz. The runway 30 approach is supported by an ILS, giving pilots a precision approach aid into the field.

History

Jyväskylä Airport was founded as an air force base in 1939, and the first commercial flight departed six years later, in 1945. Since then it has combined military and civil roles, hosting the Finnish Air Force Academy, whose main campus lies about 5 kilometres from the airfield. The passenger terminal was renovated in the autumn of 2004. The route network to Helsinki has changed hands repeatedly over the years, passing between Finnair, Finncomm Airlines, Flybe Nordic and NyxAir, reflecting the broader pattern of subsidised regional air services in Finland; a state-subsidised twice-daily Helsinki service resumed operation on 31 October 2022 under a new public-service-obligation tender (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jyv%C3%A4skyl%C3%A4_Airport).

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to combine scheduled civil flights, currently the state-subsidised Finnair service to Helsinki, with substantial Air Force Academy flying training based at Tikkakoski. The Aviation Museum of Central Finland stands near the field, reflecting its long aviation heritage. Passenger facilities include a restaurant, a conference room and free Wi-Fi (https://www.finavia.fi/en/airports/jyvaskyla).
