Vaasa Airport lies some 9 kilometres south-east of Vaasa on Finland's Ostrobothnian coast, a Finavia-operated field with a single long hard-surfaced runway and full ILS approach capability. It has served the region since 1938 and remains the principal gateway for Ostrobothnia and South Ostrobothnia, handling scheduled and seasonal charter traffic alongside general aviation movements.

Overview

Vaasa Airport (ICAO: EFVA, IATA: VAA) is a public aerodrome operated by Finavia, serving the city of Vaasa and the surrounding Ostrobothnia and South Ostrobothnia regions on Finland's west coast. It combines scheduled airline traffic with general aviation activity, and its long, well-equipped runway with an ILS approach makes it a useful and interesting waypoint for simulator pilots flying in western Finland.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in Pohjanmaa (Ostrobothnia), Finland, about 9 kilometres south-east of Vaasa city centre. It is a controlled aerodrome with its own tower service, reflected in the published TWR frequency, and it forms part of the Finnish airway and airspace structure serving the Ostrobothnian coast.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 16/34, of hard (asphalt) surface with runway lighting. The runway is listed at 8946 feet on the 16 approach and 8183 feet on the 34 approach, and it is equipped with an ILS serving runway 16, giving instrument approach capability at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Vaasa Airport publishes an ATIS on 114.5 MHz and a Tower frequency of 119.3 MHz. The field's ILS provides an instrument approach to runway 16, supporting operations in reduced visibility.

History

Vaasa Airport opened in 1938 when Aero began passenger services, traffic that was interrupted during the war years. The airport building was completed in 1945 and passenger routes reopened. The field took its modern shape through the 1950s, when the runway was extended to 1,800 metres and the terminal building enlarged; in 1951 Veljekset Karhumäki opened the airport's first international route, to Sundsvall in Sweden. In 1971 the runway was extended again to 2,000 metres and Finnair introduced jet services with the DC-9. A major expansion in 1993 gave the airport separate domestic and international facilities, and in October 1998 the runway was lengthened once more, to 2,500 metres, pushing the field toward more international operations. The terminal was further renovated in 2014. Vaasa Airport was named Finland's Airport of the Year in 2005, 2008 and 2017. The remains of a decommissioned 11/29 asphalt runway, some 1,500 metres long, can still be found to the south-west of the current aerodrome. In June 2024 the airport hosted the Vaasa Airshow, the first such event in 40 years.

The Airfield Today

Vaasa Airport continues to operate under Finavia as a scheduled and charter gateway, with Finnair linking Vaasa to Helsinki and Umea, Scandinavian Airlines operating to Stockholm-Arlanda, and seasonal charter flights such as those to Gran Canaria. A local flying club, the Vaasa Flying Club, is associated with the field and organised the 2024 airshow marking the return of air displays to the airport after four decades.
