Bristol Airport (ICAO: EGGD) is a licensed international airport at Lulsgate Bottom on the northern slopes of the Mendip Hills, some eight miles southwest of Bristol city centre. It operates a single instrument runway with full ATC services, making it a substantial and busy destination for a VFR or IFR flight into the southwest of England.

Overview

Bristol Airport lies at Lulsgate Bottom in North Somerset, on the northern edge of the Mendip Hills, and serves as the principal commercial airport for the city of Bristol and the wider southwest of England. It occupies the site of a former RAF airfield and today holds a Civil Aviation Authority Public Use Aerodrome Licence covering public transport flights and flying instruction. For a simulator pilot it offers a well-equipped single-runway airport with an ILS approach and a full range of air traffic services, set in attractive high ground above the Bristol Channel.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in North Somerset, on the northern slopes of the Mendip Hills, roughly eight miles southwest of Bristol city centre. Its elevated position and proximity to Bristol's other airfields and to the Bristol Channel make it a significant feature of the local low-level airspace picture in the southwest of England.

Runways

Bristol has one physical runway, 09/27, oriented east-west. Runway 09 is 6589 feet long and Runway 27 is 6175 feet long; both are hard-surfaced, lit, and served by an ILS.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided on Bristol Tower 133.85 MHz, Bristol Ground 121.925 MHz and Bristol Radar 136.075 MHz, with airport information broadcast on the Bristol ATIS at 126.025 MHz. Runway 09/27 is equipped with an ILS, supporting instrument approaches to either end of the runway.

History

The airport was built on the site of a former RAF airfield and opened in 1957 as Bristol (Lulsgate) Airport, taking over from Bristol (Whitchurch) Airport as the city's municipal airport. Whitchurch itself had opened in 1930, when it was formally inaugurated by Prince George, Duke of Kent, becoming only the third civil airport in the United Kingdom; it had grown out of proposals put forward by the Bristol and Wessex Aeroplane Club, a flying club founded in 1927 and originally based at Filton Aerodrome. From 1997 until 2010 the Lulsgate airport traded as Bristol International Airport. Ownership changed hands during this period, with a majority shareholding sold to FirstGroup in 1997 and the airport subsequently sold in 2001 to a joint venture led by Macquarie Bank.

The Airfield Today

Bristol Airport holds a Civil Aviation Authority Public Use Aerodrome Licence permitting both public transport flights and flying instruction, and it functions as a busy regional airport with scheduled airline services alongside general aviation movements.
