Southampton Airport (ICAO: EGHI) is a controlled aerodrome in Hampshire, England, straddling the boundary between Eastleigh and the city of Southampton itself. It combines scheduled airline services with a long-standing role in flying training and general aviation, all overseen by a full ATC tower and approach service.

Overview

Southampton Airport sits a few kilometres north-northeast of Southampton city centre, on the boundary between Eastleigh and Southampton, Hampshire. It holds a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence that permits both public transport flights and flying instruction, giving it a dual character as a scheduled airline gateway and a base for general aviation and training activity. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers full ATC services, an ILS approach and a single main hard runway, making it a useful and well-equipped South Coast destination.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies within controlled airspace served by Southampton's own air traffic control, with Solent Radar and Southampton Approach providing radar and approach services to traffic in the surrounding area. The field is close to the Solent and the busy general and commercial shipping lanes of Southampton Water, and sits near other South Coast aerodromes and the wider Solent airspace complex. Its position, a short distance northeast of central Southampton, places it near the boundary of the city and the town of Eastleigh.

Runways

Southampton has a single physical runway, 02/20, surfaced in hard standing and lit for night operations. Runway 20 is 5,492 ft long and equipped with an ILS, while the reciprocal runway 02 is 5,399 ft long. The field elevation is 36 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Southampton Approach is available on 122.73 MHz, with Solent Radar providing radar service on 120.23 MHz. Southampton Tower operates on 118.205 MHz, and pilots can obtain automated field information from Southampton Information ATIS on 130.88 MHz. An operations frequency is also listed on 130.65 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 20.

History

The airfield's origins lie in the early 1930s: Southampton Corporation purchased the site in 1932 under powers granted by the Southampton Corporation Act 1931, which allowed for the creation of a public aerodrome, and it opened as Southampton Municipal Airport. By 1935 part of the site was in use by the Royal Air Force, briefly as RAF Eastleigh, before it was renamed RAF Southampton in 1936. The airport later returned to civil use and grew into a scheduled airline gateway for the South Coast.

The Airfield Today

Southampton Airport is now owned and operated by AviAlliance, which also owns and operates Aberdeen and Glasgow airports, having taken on the airport as part of its network from January 2025; it was previously owned and operated by Heathrow Airport Holdings (formerly BAA). Alongside its scheduled airline traffic, the airport's Public Use Aerodrome Licence continues to permit flying instruction, maintaining its long-standing role in general aviation training alongside commercial operations.
