Bodmin Airfield is a small grass aerodrome on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, home to the Cornwall Flying Club. It offers flight training, air experience flights and a friendly clubhouse atmosphere, and welcomes visiting pilots on a strict prior-permission basis.

Overview

Bodmin Airfield is a privately operated grass airfield in Cornwall, home to the Cornwall Flying Club Ltd, which runs flight training, air experience flights and self-fly hire from the site. It has a clubhouse and the AeroDine Café, and is a popular destination for visiting pilots wanting to explore the Cornish coast and Bodmin Moor by air. The field is notable among UK airfields for having been recognised as a County Wildlife Site, its grass runways and surrounds supporting one of the largest traditional wildflower meadows in the region.

Airspace & Location

Bodmin lies within uncontrolled Class G airspace on the edge of Bodmin Moor, just off the A30 trunk road, a short drive from the market town of Bodmin itself.

Runways

The airfield has two grass runways, both lit. Runway 13/31 is the longer of the two, with 13 recorded at 2097 ft and 31 at 1876 ft. Runway 02/20 runs 1775 ft in each direction. Field elevation is 646 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Bodmin operates an air-to-ground radio service, callsign Bodmin A/G, on 122.7 MHz. There are no instrument approaches or navaids at the field, and it is not equipped with ILS.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

The published circuit height is 800 ft above airfield level. According to the flying club's visiting pilot information, circuits for runways 03 and 31 are flown left-hand, while 21 and 13 are right-hand. Noise abatement is taken seriously: pilots flying variable-pitch propeller aircraft are asked to reduce RPM to 2450 or below and to reduce power once at 300 ft AGL until well clear of the airfield vicinity, and departing traffic is asked to be mindful of marked noise-sensitive areas around the field.

Visual Reference Points

The airfield sits on the edge of Bodmin Moor close to the A30, which provides a useful line feature for inbound traffic, with the town of Bodmin itself a short distance to the southwest.

History

Bodmin Airfield was the realisation of a dream by local businessman Mike Robertson, founder of Trago Mills, who wanted to make flying accessible to everyone. Local engineers, the Dingle Brothers, were commissioned to construct the airfield on the site of the former Treswithick Farm. The Cornwall Flying Club acquired the airfield in the 1970s, becoming a limited company, Cornwall Flying Club Ltd, in 1978, and has operated it as a non-profit organisation ever since in keeping with Robertson's original ideals.

The Airfield Today

The airfield is open seven days a week except Christmas Day, from 0900 to 1700 (sunset by arrangement), and is home to the Cornwall Flying Club, which offers air experience flights and training towards the Private Pilot's Licence and National Private Pilot's Licence. The AeroDine Café serves hot food and is open Tuesday to Sunday, 0930 to 1530, with hot food until 1430. 100LL fuel is available on site. Prior permission is required for all visiting aircraft, to be arranged in advance through the airfield.
