London City Airport (EGLC) sits in the Royal Docks of east London, about six miles east of the City of London and three miles east of Canary Wharf. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway served by ILS, and its steep 5.5 degree approach and strict aircraft-size limits make it one of the more distinctive fields a simulator pilot can fly into in the London area.

Overview

London City Airport, ICAO code EGLC, is an international airport built in the Royal Docks of east London. It was conceived as a city-centre STOLport-style gateway and today handles scheduled airline traffic while remaining unusually constrained in the size and type of aircraft it can accept, which gives it a particular character for anyone flying there in a simulator.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in the Royal Docks area of London, roughly six miles east of the City of London and three miles east of Canary Wharf, the two centres of the city's financial industry that the airport was originally built to serve.

Runways

London City Airport has a single physical runway, 09/27, of hard surface construction and just under 4930 feet in length (4920 ft on runway 09, 4927 ft on runway 27). The runway is lit and equipped with an ILS, and the field elevation is 16 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can expect the following frequencies at London City: Approach on 132.7 MHz, ATIS on 136.35 MHz, Ground on 121.825 MHz, and Tower on 118.075 MHz. The runway is equipped with an ILS to support instrument approaches.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

Approaches into London City are flown at a steep 5.5 degree glidepath, a distinctive feature of operations here that requires specific aircraft and aircrew certification. Only multi-engine, fixed-wing aircraft up to the size of an Embraer E195-E2, Airbus A220 or Airbus A318 are permitted to operate at the airport, and strict noise limitations and further operating restrictions apply.

History

London City Airport was first proposed in 1981 by Reg Ward, chief executive of the newly formed London Docklands Development Corporation, which was responsible for regenerating the Docklands area. Ward discussed the proposal with Philip Beck, chairman of John Mowlem & Co, and by November 1981 Mowlem and Bill Bryce of Brymon Airways had submitted an outline proposal to the LDDC for a Docklands STOLport serving as a city-centre gateway airport.

The Airfield Today

The airport operates under a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence, Licence Number P728, which permits public transport passenger flights. The licence also allows training flights, but only for the purpose of training pilots to operate specifically at this airport. Operations remain restricted to multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft up to Embraer E195-E2, Airbus A220 or Airbus A318 size, with crews and aircraft specially certified for the airport's steep approach and subject to strict noise limitations.
