Newcastle International Airport (EGNT) is the principal airport of North East England, situated at Woolsington some seven and a half miles northwest of Newcastle city centre. It offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway and full air traffic control services, making it a straightforward if busy destination for visiting pilots flying into a major regional hub.

Overview

Newcastle International Airport serves Newcastle upon Tyne and the wider North East of England, operating as the region's main gateway for scheduled airline traffic. For a visiting simulator pilot it presents a substantial single-runway international field with full instrument approach capability and an active control tower, set in the rolling countryside northwest of the city.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at Woolsington, about 7.7 miles (12.4 km) northwest of Newcastle city centre. As a major international airport it is served by its own approach and tower frequencies, placing it within controlled airspace associated with the aerodrome.

Runways

Newcastle has a single physical runway, 07/25, of hard construction and just over 7,300 feet in length (7,310 ft on runway 07, 7,260 ft on runway 25). It is lit and equipped with an ILS at both thresholds, supporting instrument approaches in either direction.

Radio & Navigation

Newcastle Approach operates on 124.375 MHz, with the airport's ATIS broadcasting on 118.375 MHz. Ground movements are handled on 121.725 MHz, and Newcastle Tower is on 119.7 MHz. The ILS serving runway 07/25 is on 111.5 MHz.

History

The airport traces its origins to 1929, when Newcastle-upon-Tyne City Council set up a committee to investigate sites for an airport to serve North-East England, eventually selecting Woolsington, about five miles northwest of the city centre, from eighteen candidate locations. The original development comprised a clubhouse, hangar, workshops, fuel garage and grass runway, built at a cost of £35,000, and it became the home of the Newcastle upon Tyne Flying Club, which relocated from Cramlington Aerodrome to run the new airfield on behalf of the council. By 1978, with passenger numbers approaching one million a year, the airport was designated a regional international hub in the UK government's White Paper on Airports Policy, a period during which it was rebranded as Newcastle Airport.

The Airfield Today

Newcastle Airport today operates as a large international airport with a single passenger terminal and scheduled services to more than eighty destinations, serving as a base or focus city for several airlines. It is jointly owned by seven local authorities and an infrastructure investor, with a further ownership change pending regulatory approval. For pilots, it remains a controlled, ILS-equipped aerodrome with full approach, tower and ground frequencies in operation.
