Peterborough/Sibson Airfield is a small unlicensed grass aerodrome to the west of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, best known as home to Peterborough Flying School and a busy parachuting centre. It is the sole surviving satellite airfield of the former RAF Peterborough station, now Westwood, and remains an active general aviation and skydiving site today.
Peterborough/Sibson Airfield, also known as Sibson Aerodrome, is a privately operated grass airfield lying to the west of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. It is unlicensed but remains active, hosting a flying training organisation and a well-established parachuting operation, and it holds a place in local aviation history as the only surviving satellite airfield of RAF Peterborough. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers a grass-only, informally operated field with an air-to-ground radio service rather than full air traffic control.
The airfield lies about 6 nautical miles (11 km) west of Peterborough and around 1 km south of the village of Sibson, Cambridgeshire. The present airfield sits to the north of the original wartime site, of which little now remains as the land reverted to farming after the Second World War.
Sibson has three grass runway pairs, all lit. The 06/24 pair measures 1627 ft on the 06 threshold and 2212 ft on the 24 threshold. The 15/33 pair measures 1804 ft on 15 and 1387 ft on 33. The 07/25 pair measures 1120 ft on 07 and 1771 ft on 25. There is no ILS at the field.
Sibson operates an air-to-ground (A/G) radio service under the callsign Peterborough Sibson A/G, on frequencies 120.325 MHz and 122.3 MHz. No instrument approach aids or navaids are noted for the airfield.
Sibson Aerodrome originated as a satellite airfield of RAF Peterborough, the station now occupied by Westwood in Cambridgeshire, and is the only one of that station's satellites to have survived. One T1-type hangar remains on the airfield, standing to the north of the original wartime site, which was returned to agricultural use after the war and now shows little trace of its former layout. The aerodrome was for many years licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority under Ordinary Licence number P5877, permitting public transport flights and flying instruction under the authority of the licensee, Northamptonshire School of Flying Limited. It became unlicensed in 2013.
The airfield is home to Peterborough Flying School Ltd, a CAA/EASA Approved Training Organisation operating a mixed fleet that has included Cessna A150 Aerobat and Long Range variants and a Piper PA28-160 Cherokee, alongside numerous privately owned aircraft based on site. Sibson is also the long-standing home of UK Parachuting, a skydiving centre previously known as Skydive Sibson and Skydive Airkix, which conducts jumps from a based Cessna 208.
