Exeter International Airport (ICAO: EGTE) lies at Clyst Honiton in East Devon, a few miles east of Exeter city, and offers a single long hard runway equipped with ILS, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for visiting simulator pilots. Operated under a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence, it has served as the South West's principal scheduled and charter airport for decades, though its traffic has fluctuated considerably in recent years.

Overview

Exeter International Airport sits at Clyst Honiton in East Devon, close to the city of Exeter, and holds a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P759) permitting both public transport flights and flying instruction. For a simulator pilot it offers a full-length instrument runway with ILS guidance, a radar and tower service, and the character of a regional international airport that has weathered significant swings in commercial fortune, from carrying over a million passengers a year at its peak to a sharp post-pandemic contraction and partial recovery.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Exeter city centre and roughly 170 miles west-south-west of London, in the county of Devon, South West England, near the villages of Clyst Honiton, Pinhoe and Sowton. It is connected to the south by the A30 dual carriageway, with the M5 motorway passing just 1.5 miles to the west, giving pilots useful linear features for orientation on approach.

Runways

Exeter has a single physical runway, 08/26, of 6,663 ft (approximately 2,031 m) with a hard surface. It is lit and equipped with an ILS, supporting instrument approaches in both directions.

Radio & Navigation

Exeter is served by the callsign Exeter. Approach can be contacted on 128.975 MHz, Radar on 123.57 MHz, and Tower on 119.8 MHz, with the ATIS broadcasting on 119.325 MHz. The field elevation is 98 ft, and the runway's ILS supports instrument approaches to either end of 08/26.

History

Exeter Airport, formerly styled Exeter International Airport, has long been East Devon's principal gateway airfield, holding a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence that covers both public transport flights and flying instruction. For many years the regional carrier Flybe accounted for over 80 percent of the airport's passenger traffic, a dependence that proved significant when the airline collapsed in 2020. The airport was sold to Rigby Group PLC in 2013, and passenger numbers, which had once topped a million a year, fell sharply to around 148,000 in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic before recovering to approximately 500,000 per year by 2024.

The Airfield Today

Exeter continues to operate as a licensed public transport aerodrome, handling scheduled and charter services alongside flying instruction, with passenger numbers having recovered to around 500,000 a year by 2024 following the pandemic-era downturn and the loss of Flybe as its dominant operator. The airport is owned by Rigby Group PLC.
