Groningen Airport Eelde (EHGG) is a regional international airport in the northern Netherlands, sited near the village of Eelde in the province of Drenthe just south of the city of Groningen. With a full-length ILS-equipped main runway and its own approach and tower service, it offers a straightforward destination for VFR and IFR visitors alike, alongside scheduled holiday and business traffic.
Groningen Airport Eelde is a mid-sized international airport serving the three northern provinces of the Netherlands, offering scheduled leisure flights to Mediterranean and other European destinations as well as business aviation. For a visiting simulator pilot it is a useful waypoint in the otherwise quiet northeastern Dutch airspace, combining an ILS-served long runway with a genuine regional-airport atmosphere rather than the congestion of Schiphol.
The airport lies near the village of Eelde in the province of Drenthe, about 4.8 nautical miles south of the city of Groningen. It is a controlled aerodrome with its own approach and tower service, sitting within otherwise sparsely controlled airspace in the northeastern Netherlands.
Eelde has two paved runways. The main runway, 05/23, is 8,178 feet long, hard-surfaced, lit, and served by an ILS on runway 23. The secondary runway, 01/19, is 4,890 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 10 feet.
Traffic should contact Eelde Approach on 120.305 MHz for arrival and departure sequencing. ATIS is broadcast on 133.555 MHz. Ground and clearance delivery is provided as Eelde GND/CLNC DEL on 121.705 MHz, and Eelde Tower operates on 118.705 MHz. Runway 23 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.
The site began life in 1928 as the 'Hakenkampsveld', a 12-hectare plot allocated by the Eelde community council for an airport, following interest from KLM in an air link between Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Groningen. It opened officially in 1931 and was renamed 'Luchthaven Eelde' in 1933, with the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe, the municipalities of Groningen, Eelde and Assen, and regional Chambers of Commerce as stockholders of the operating company. During the Second World War the airport was occupied by the German military. Scheduled European services began in 1958, and a noise pollution committee was later established after aircraft noise was found to be a greater issue at Eelde than at comparable airports. A new passenger terminal opened in 1977 along with expanded car parking and a bus link to Groningen. The airport took its current name, Groningen Airport Eelde, in 1988.
Today Groningen Airport Eelde operates as a regional international airport offering scheduled seasonal and year-round leisure flights to destinations including Antalya, Gran Canaria, Crete, Burgas, and the Channel Islands, alongside business aviation activity. The airport describes itself as serving the northern Netherlands region, including the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Flevoland, Gelderland and the German border area.
