Gilze-Rijen Air Base is a Royal Netherlands Air Force installation in Noord-Brabant, near the town of Rijen, built around two substantial paved runways. It is a working military airfield rather than a civil aerodrome, and its scale and infrastructure reflect decades of use as a front-line air force base rather than as a general aviation field.
Gilze-Rijen Air Base is a military airfield of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (Koninklijke Luchtmacht), situated close to the town of Rijen in the province of Noord-Brabant. For a simulator pilot it is interesting chiefly as a large, well-equipped military field with two long hard-surfaced runways and a full military air traffic service, offering a contrast to the smaller civil grass strips typical of the region.
The base lies at coordinates 51.5674N, 4.9318E, near Rijen in Noord-Brabant, at an elevation of 46 feet. As an active military air base it sits within managed airspace served by its own approach, arrival and tower services rather than a simple civil ATZ.
The field has two physical runways. The main runway, 10/28, is 8670 feet long on runway heading 10 and 8638 feet on the reciprocal 28, with a hard surface and runway lighting. A secondary runway, 02/20, is 6150 feet long heading 02 and 6141 feet on the reciprocal 20, also hard-surfaced and lit. There is no ILS at the field.
Air traffic services are provided under military callsigns and frequencies: RAPCON West Approach on APP 123.58 MHz, Gilze Arrival on ARR 123.58 MHz, Dutch Military Center on CENTER 125.93 MHz, Dutch MIL Info on FIS 132.35 MHz, Gilze-Rijen Ground on GND 121.68 MHz, and Gilze-Rijen Tower on TWR 125.33 MHz.
Gilze-Rijen remains an active military air base of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. As a military installation it is not a general aviation field open to casual visits, and prior permission would be required for any flight to or from the base.
