Middenmeer Aerodrome (EHOP) is a small grass airfield near the village of Middenmeer in the reclaimed Wieringermeer polder of Noord-Holland, lying below sea level and given over exclusively to ultralight flying. It has a single grass runway pair, no instrument approach, and traces its origins back to the 1930s and a wartime role as a Royal Netherlands Air Force reconnaissance base.
Middenmeer Aerodrome, ICAO code EHOP, is a small airfield serving the village of Middenmeer in the Wieringermeer polder of Noord-Holland. It is used exclusively by ultralight aviation, its short grass strip being unable to support heavier aircraft, and hosts a flight school. For a simulator pilot it offers an example of flying into reclaimed polder land that sits below sea level, with a straightforward single-runway layout and a notable wartime past.
The aerodrome lies at Opperdoes, in the municipality of Hollands Kroon, Provincie Noord-Holland, within the flat, low-lying farmland of the Wieringermeer polder. The nearby village of Middenmeer itself lies about 23 kilometres north of Hoorn, and the aerodrome is situated to the southeast of Den Helder.
Middenmeer has a single physical runway, 05/23, oriented northeast-southwest, with a grass surface measuring 1904 feet in length. There is no ILS or other instrument approach available.
The aerodrome sits immediately alongside the village of Middenmeer, in open, flat polder farmland southeast of Den Helder, which serves as the principal landmark for identifying and approaching the field from the air.
The airstrip at Middenmeer was established in 1934. During the Second World War a military airfield near the village was used by the 1st Reconnaissance Group (1e Verkenningsgroep) of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The surrounding Wieringermeer polder itself has a dramatic wartime history: on 17 April 1945 the German occupying forces blew up the polder's dikes, flooding the land and forcing the evacuation of Middenmeer and neighbouring villages, before the polder was pumped dry again by 11 December 1945.
Middenmeer Aerodrome is used exclusively by ultralight aviation, as its short grass runway cannot support heavier aircraft. A flight school operates from the airfield, and an open day is held there annually. Since 14 October 2022 the airfield has been open to aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to 890 kilograms.
